Did you know? 333MHz is officially unlocked

PSP owners have been hotly anticipating an official unlock of PSP's full capabilities. The system runs at 222MHz, 1/3 less than what the system is capable of. But, did you know that ever since firmware 3.0, the PSP has been running at 333MHz? Yes, it's true ... but the system only runs at maximum speed for emulated PSone games.

What? Didn't the original PlayStation run at 33MHz? Yes, it's true. So why does the PSP have to run ten times faster to run PSone games? Well, software emulation is pretty complex stuff (ask the people at Microsoft: they know a little something with Xbox 360's backwards compatibility). With Sony having unlocked the PSP's full clock speed, will wee see other games take advantage? I'm sure a studio like Ready at Dawn can do some truly amazing things.

Is 3.0 accelerating the PSP?

Various users on the 1UP, IGN and QJ forums have reported increased performance of games running the new 3.0 firmware. Some games are reported to have faster load times, while others simply run a lot more smoothly and quickly. To a few users, Vice City Stories supposedly features a huge performance boost, with a much better framerate and less draw-in. Web browsing is supposedly faster as well (although memory errors are still common). Popular opinion seems to be that Sony has increased the clock speed of the PSP from its default 222MHz (note: The PSP can go up to 333MHz, but this was restricted due to battery drain issues). Others have suggested that the coding of the firmware is simply much more efficient.

While I've been running 3.0, I haven't noticed any significant difference in the games that I've played, meaning groupthink may be coming into play. Wouldn't Sony want to highlight or advertise such a potentially big performance increase? For users of 3.0, post a comment below, and tell the rest of us if you've experienced a speed boost in your gaming recently.

Will you make the upgrade to 3.0?

Will you make the upgrade?
Yes. I love to have the latest firmware.
No, not until games require them.
No, homebrew FTW!
Firmware 3.0 is out, and not everyone is rejoicing. Some are bitter that they need an impossible-to-get PS3 to download PSone games (for now, at least). Others just don't want to bother with an upgrade. Thinking about all the new features of Sony's latest official firmware, will you make the upgrade? Or, will you keep your current firmware, for whatever reason (homebrew or not)?

Music visualizations in 3.00 kick butt [m]

I captured this quick video of the PSP running music on 3.0 firmware just to show off how impressive and varied they are. This is a feature that I certainly didn't see coming, and it's great to see Sony adding such a valuable tool. You can watch the video above, or download it to your PSP's 100ANV folder here:

Firmware 3.00 now available via Network Update

It's finally here. The Megaton firmware. THREE POINT ZERO ZERO. All you have to do is access Network Update and download the file. (As of this writing, the upgrade is not available on the US or Japanese PSP websites.)

This update includes the following changes:
  • PLAYSTATION Network titles are now supported under [Game].
  • [Remote Play] has been added as a feature under [Network].
  • [Online Instruction Manuals] has been added as a feature under [Network].
  • Timed recording has been added as a feature under [RSS Channel].

  • [UMD Auto-Start] has been added as a feature in [System Settings] under [Settings].
For those of you that don't have wi-fi access, I have provided a downloadable update for you. Connect your PSP via USB, and then go to the PSP/GAME folder. Create the folder "UPDATE" and place the EBOOT file there. From your PSP, access your Memory Stick's games, and choose the update.

3.0 manual online; confirms PS3 necessary for downloadable games!

Our reader Matt T. sent in a very hot tip. It appears that the online manual for PSP version 3.0 is up and running. Thankfully, it doesn't have any features removed. However, it confirms our fears that a PS3 is necessary to download games to the PSP. Here's the proof:

"Play PLAYSTATION®Network titles downloaded from (PLAYSTATION®Store). A PLAYSTATION®3 system is required to use this feature."

What??? Didn't Peter Dille confirm that you didn't need a PS3 to download games to the system? Sony's got a lot of explaining to do...

3.00 firmware to miss PS3 launch

After weeks of speculation, we can finally report that the hotly anticipated 3.00 update will not be coming out during the PLAYSTATION 3 launch. Some have assumed that the firmware upgrade will occur in tandem with the Japanese launch of the system, happening less than two days from now. However, 1UP and IGN are both reporting that the firmware upgrade won't be coming until "the end of November." The upgrade will enable the impressive Remote Play functionality, and will make it possible for PSP users to play downloaded content from the PS3. There was no mention of a new Flash client.

The PLAYSTATION 3 will launch with a firmware upgrade, but for the next-gen console. First-time users will be required to upgrade their system firmware to 1.10 in order to access the PlayStation Hub. It seems like PS3 owners will get into the habit of upgrading their system software from day one.

Rumor: New info on firmware 3.0 to be released on Gamer's Day [Update 1]

People seem to be real antsy about the release of the upcoming 3.0 firmware from Sony, and lame fakers on the internet are capitalizing on our anticipation. According to PlayStation forum user, Leah, the 3.0 firmware upgrade will be released this Thursday at Sony's Gamer's Day. Here's what she said:
"Sony will be reveling the information as well as dating the release about the next major update at Gamer's Day in San Francisco on October 19th. You guys will just love the new "Remote Play" feature, located under the "Network" icon, which allows you to access the PLAYSTATION® 3 from the PSP™ (PlayStation® Portable)."
Once again, I'm going to say that this is a fake. Why? What's the point of releasing Remote Play before the PS3 is even available? There might be some credibility to her story: the thread got locked suspiciously quickly, and she properly CAPITALIZED PLAYSTATION (the proper spelling is all caps, according to Sony). She even threw in the Registered® and Trademark™ symbols on everything appropriately. Regardless, I believe the show on Thursday will most likely focus solely on the PS3, digital distribution, and will provide news about PSP-PS3 connectivity. If there is a firmware upgrade this Thursday, I'm placing my bets it'll be a minor release, like 2.90. If it gives me the abillity to stream videos over RSS, I'll be perfectly content.

Joystiq will be live at the event this Thursday, so we'll find out the truth then.

[Via Maxconsole; Thanks, steve!]

[Update 1: D'oh! I am dumb. If I knew how to read, I'd see that info will be released, not the firmware itself. Please excuse my brain death. I'll blame the new Santa Clause movie, because it's the "best holiday trilogy ever." Ugh. Feel free to ridicule me in the comments section. Go! Hurry, do it!]

Rumor: 3.0 beta firmware from YourPSP?

Two tipsters sent in two different links showing the same image of a YourPSP member supposedly receiving a 3.0 firmware "beta." kedar pancholi sent a link in from MAXCONSOLE and wraggster sent a link in from DCemu. The firmware is supposed to include support for GIF, MOV, WMV and FLV files, and support for PSone emulation. Sounds too good to be true, right? Well, I'm going to say this is a fake. Why? There's no reason to "beta" test something unless it has significant online capabilities. And, Sony isn't stupid enough to let a "beta" firmware out, one that could be ripe with potential security holes.
