Open Edition firmware: best of both worlds?

Homebrew became even more attractive to regular users thanks to the introduction of custom firmware. Releases from developers like Dark_Alex combined the functionality of Sony's official firmware and gave users the ability to access homebrew. PSP limitations, such as in video, were not present in the OE firmwares, and many viewed them as superior than Sony's.
