Top 5 on PSP: Fighting

The PSP has been selling quite well recently and I figured some new PSP owners may not know what great games the system has to offer. With that in mind, every day this week we'll feature a new genre and list the top 5 games (according to metareviews), so no matter what you're into, you'll have some idea of what games you should own. Today the focus is on Fighting games, a genre that used to be one of the biggest things in gaming, but has lost some popularity with time. I'm still a big fighting game fan though, so I had to make this list.

Top 5 Fighting games on PSP

  1. Tekken: Dark Ressurrection
  2. WWE Smackdown! vs. RAW 2006
  3. Street Fighter Alpha 3 MAX
  4. Def Jam Fight for NY: The Takeover
  5. Guilty Gear Judgement

This list doesn't include import games like Bleach or Naruto, so my personal list of best fighting games would be different. But what do you think about these 5 games? What fighting games aren't on this list that you think every PSP owner should have?

Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max kicks into the scene

It's official: Capcom's acclaimed brawler Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max has been released. Boasting over thirty characters to kick butt with, this title still has what it takes to satisfy those violent tendencies we all deal with (or most of us anyway). Like wine and women, it only gets better with age.

After six years, Street Fighter can still deliver like a punch to the face. Check out Gamespot's full review of it here. By the looks of it, fighting fans have a lot love about this arcade port.

Street Fighter Alpha Max 3 preview

There’s somewhat of a dearth of quality fighting games on the PSP. Well, there’s honestly a lack of most everything on our goshdarned little console (except racing games – we got plenty of those) but we’re happy to report that IGN’s happy to report that the forthcoming Street Fighter Alpha Max 3 is coming along very nicely. According to the preview, there’s a ton of features to play around with in the game, and even with the presence of multiple characters onscreen, slowdown is next to non-existent.

We’ll most likely have a review roundup posted when the game launches next month. Until then, you can entertain yourself with The Con. Yeah, we’d rather just count rice grains too.

Capcom addresses sore thumbs with SF D-pad cover

Anyone who's ever played Street Fighter 2 or any of its many iterations across the console landscape will tell you that the nth hour of fighting will bring about either A.) sheer animosity for that buddy who constantly wins by pulling the same cheap move over and over again, or B.) a severe case of thumb pain that may or may not come with a throbbing blister. Thankfully, Capcom has been more than aware of this and is pledging to release a limited-edition D-pad cover for the PSP with the Japanese release of Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max (better known as Street Fighter Zero 3 Double Upper to our friends in the Land of the Rising Sun).

Billed by Capcom as the "Official Support Pad", fighting game fans should note that these will be doled out in limited quantities, so you should keep tabs on your favorite import sites when the game is released in Japan this January 19.

Unfortunately, there's still no solution as of yet in regard to dealing with that cheating friend of yours.
