Publishers are "getting it wrong"

Mark Cale from third party publisher Play It recently went on record with MCV, saying that publishers on the PSP are simply "getting it wrong."
"The reason so many games have failed on PSP is that big publishers are prioritising lavish, full 3D productions ahead of gameplay," said Cale. "But this type of game will never be as big as it is on home console, because handheld users are seeking a more addictive, distracting experience."
He calls Capcom's Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins to be one of the few games developed with the system in mind, by keeping classic gameplay and updating it with new, modern graphics. While I agree with Mr. Cale's opinions, I find it difficult to support him fully-- what games has his publisher made? I can't think of any off the top of my head.

[Thanks, steve!]

Metareview - Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins

Metareview - Ultimate Ghosts 'n GoblinsIt's been well documented throughout the annals of time that Andrew is overly obsessed with anything Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins. I mean the guy has practically been hanging onto every whim of new information that has become available since he's heard of the game.

And now that the game has just been released and reviews have poured in, I'm not sure whether he's happily playing it or if he's on suicide watch. You see, the game hasn't neccessarily been the poster child for great reviews; rather, it's reviews have seen more up and downs than Ike and Tina spending the winter locked in a log cabin in Montana. The game currently has an 73% average score on Metacritic.

  • Play Magazine (95/100) says "Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins is '2D,' but it's also a highly-produced, meticulously planned, big-budget release. This is no throwback to side-scrollers gone by, this is 2D handheld gaming."
  • Gamerfeed (70/100) tells us what we already know: "This game is about as hard as petrified wood. Capcom eased things up a bit by tossing three difficulty levels into the mix, but even the added confidence booster couldn't save me from dying hundreds of times."
  • Official U.S. Playstation Magazine (40/100) gets down to the nitty gritty: "The ugly: The graphics, the controls, the level design."

Use magic in Ultimate Ghosts n' Goblins

If you haven't noticed already, Andrew has a big man crush on Arthur and Ultimate Ghost n' Goblins, writing about the game probably more than at a baker's dozen. But, never wanting to miss out on a good thing, I reckon it's about darn time I throw my hat in the ring.

Now that Ghost n' Goblins is releasing a week early, I'm sure many of you out there just can't wait to get your grubby little mitts on the game. To help satiate your burning desire, I bring you another gameplay clip. This time, though, it focuses on the game's magic aspects. It looks like Arthur now has the ability to engulf himself in fire, throw fireballs and turn enemies to stone. I guess he wears those flame retardant boxers they have out now.

Get killed by Ghosts 'n Goblins a week early

If you're like me, you can't wait to play Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins. Well, Capcom has heard our pleas and is now shipping the game a full week early. That's seven more days of seeing Game Over screens! The game now ships on August 29th, saving you from the burden of having to buy this and Loco Roco on the same day.

Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins video blowout has gone absolutely crazy with Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins, posting three new videos of the game in motion. We've covered this game quite extensively so far, and although there may be mixed impressions of the quality of the game, the video evidence seems to suggest that this game will be undoubtedly awesome.

Living the life of Ghouls and Goblins' Arthur

This somewhat lengthy video chronicles the daily going-ons of Ultimate Ghouls and Goblins' Arthur. It's been 15 years since his first game, he recollects. He walks around, trading in the jewels he's collected from his adventures for cold, hard cash. Living the life of a traditional Japanese man (wearing only boxers) just doesn't cut it for him though. Thankfully, it appears that the princess is kidnapped, and he must once again fight the forces of evil. You can check out the video here, and then visit the official Japanese website here. The game releases September 5th in America and is available on

Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins: It doesn't get any easier [update 1]

Akiko Nagashima, artist at Capcom had this to say about the 2D genre:
"Recently, it seems like side-scrolling action games and shooters are in short supply. Maybe it's because of this that there doesn't seem to be very many high-precision-, skill-, and timing-based games on the market any more."

It's true that side-scrolling games are in short supply, but that doesn't mean that we at the Fanboy don't love them. In fact, every new video update provided by the team at Capcom has had us craving for more and more. Gamespot has been kind enough to show us titilating new footage from the second level of the game, and unsurprisingly, it seems even more difficult than the already-insane first level. Bring it on!

Hard, harder and hardest: Ghosts 'n Goblins

Extra! Extra! Read all about it! Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins for the PSP is ridiculously hard! Gamespot recently went hands-on with the upcoming PSP exclusive, and it seems like all they can talk about is the game's harrowing difficulty. (But haven't they done that before?) "There are three difficulty settings in the game--novice, standard, and ultimate--but you might as well call them hard, harder, and hardest, since none of them are anything approaching easy."

The stakes are even higher in this chapter of the series, as not only have the monsters kidnapped the princess, but they want to make babies with her. Things are going to get messy. Thankfully, Arthur will have a huge stockpile of weapons to choose from: javelins, knives, scythes, crossbows, and whips. But, you'll have to choose your weapons wisely: some are better suited for particular situations. The battles you'll face will be tough, especially looking at how not only do the monsters want to kill you, the environments do as well. Check out the plethora of videos on Gamespot and get ready to feel Arthur's pain on September 5th.

Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins: it's still hard

Capcom really loves the PSP. One of the 21 titles they have planned for the PSP is Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins, a continuation of the classic Ghosts 'n Goblins series. It followed the brave knight Arthur, who had a penchant for getting naked whenever there were too many monsters around. The original was notoriously difficult, but that was part of its charm. Gamespot recently uploaded a video that showcases the PSP exclusive's beautiful graphics engine, and intense platforming gameplay. Your desire for this game will surely increase when you watch the moment when Arthur shoots a massive hadouken. Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins comes out 9/25.
