Did you read Play issue #171? If you did, you would've noticed a certain someone from a certain PSP fan blog talking about the recently released PSP-3000 (aka PSP Brite). The blogger in question talks about whether or not Sony upgraded the PSP system too quickly, and why the lack of a second analog stick is no big deal. "A lot of people [said] that Sony should 'fix' the PSP by adding a second analogue stick," says Yoon. "But that would fundamentally change the system, and potentially lock out owners of older models from upcoming games. As it stands, PSP owners, from the 1000 to the 3000 series, are all able to play upcoming games."

But then again, if a 2nd stick were added, couldn't developers just make games that have BOTH options?
The same way that a console game would disable the option for a 2-Player game if a second controller is not plugged in, or disable loading a savefile if a memory card isn't plugged in, can't developers just "gray out" the option to use a 2nd analog stick if a player has an older PSP without the 2nd stick?

For that matter, look at driving games. Many use the right stick for gas & brake OR you can use the buttons. I think the whole, earlier gen console owners would feel left out is a cop out. The whole REASON to upgrade a console is to GIVE incentive for people to upgrade and I don't rightly feel adding a right control analog stick justifies a PSP2, which they obviously are not ready to unveil.

What a lame excuse for not including a second stick.
It's called progress.
Just like Gameboy owners can't play DS games, PS One controllers progressed to the point of dual sticks and d-pad, etc.
Just like guy said, give the developers an option. There would be a TON of great FPS's that could show up if the controls weren't so wonky.

Your statement is even more lame.
Progress is not an overnight thing, and even you said so, the GameBoy carts have all been working up to the DS, that's over 15 years! and GameBoy Advance games still compatible, over 7 years right there!
The problem is, giving a second analog stick would make it easier for the developer to do a lazy job with the port, I know it sounds ridiculous, but you see, by restricting the controllers, developers are sorta forced to work around it.
Studios such as Bend, Zipper, and Slant Six have shown that great controls can be accomplished on the PSP so it is just pure bs whenever developers complain about it. If the controls of a game suck, there is no one to blame other than the developers themselves for sucking at designing.

Noshino, very true. It makes the developers be more creative in their games, because controls can sometimes decide the game.
But the second control stick would allow for those lazy developers to make a game as well. Sometimes just having games released, even if they are bad ones or poorly made, is enough to boost the customer morale.

Noshino - the point I am trying to make is that to say no to a second analog stick because they are worried about psp 1000 through 3000 users not being able to play new games feels like a weak excuse. If every company was worried about that, we'd still be using joysticks with one button.
Like the OP said, if that's the issue - then offer two control schemes. Or should every PSP model from here to the end of time stick with what it currently has to keep the lazy developers away?
Or maybe we aren't supposed to disagree because one of the august writers of this blog had something published?

no, one can disagree on anything, just like you did, and just like I disagreed with your statement. Only difference is that I corrected you and backed up my point.
See, you can't add a second analog to the PSP because it still PSP1, let's use examples shall we?
GameBoy line:
were there any changes on the controls of the following?
- Game Boy
- Play it Loud Game Boy
- Game Boy Pocket
- Game Boy Light
- Game Boy Color
ANSWER: NO
GameBoy Advance line:
were there any changes on the controls of the following?
- Game Boy Advance
- Game Boy Advance SP
- Game Boy Advance SP "Mark II"
- Game Boy Micro
ANSWER: NO
Now, the only exception to this reasoning is the DSi, but there is a difference as well, the DSi is aiming at a much broader crowd, the DS Lite has been awfully successful, and so they are just trying to extent the DS's lifetime.
Unlike Nintendo and the DS line, Sony is aiming for a crowd that is more technophobic, and that are much more informed about products and they would know that the differences aren't that radical. Those PSP-1000 would be more likely to buy a PSP2 than a PSP 2000 or 3000 series, so the second you tell them that the latest game is only compatible with the latest hardware design, they will be pissed. Not only that, other customers will be afraid as well that this might happen again and again (one of the few reasons why I don't like Nintendo anymore)

You can't compare PS1 controllers being replaced, because they didn't require you to buy a whole new SYSTEM to play the newer dual analog games.
The DS isn't a Gameboy or a GBA, it's an entirely new platform. No comparison there, either.
In fact, there exists no platform in history that required you to chuck out your old one and get a whole new one in order to play the newer games. Some systems required new peripherals or even new subsystems like the Sega 32X, but never were you required to CHUCK your whole system if you got in on the ground floor.
Upgrading the current PSP to dual analogs would simply be a nightmare. Maybe a few games could work in backward compatibility but in order to properly exploit such an upgrade there'd have to be some that didn't. Otherwise, what would be the point?
Leave internal storage, 3G, motion sensors, integrated cam/gps and dual analogs for the PSP2. Hopefully we'll hear some stirrings of such a beast sometime next year... Because Sony needs to be stirring up SOMETHING to reverse their current trajectory.

I don't see how including two different control schemes for a game (psp with 2 sticks and psp with one) is impossible. It might even help sales.

I think if they added another stick, you wont be able to hold the psp in your hand properly. It will start to slip out of your hand. Just imagine moving the two sticks at the same time and pushing them both forward. It will be kinda difficult to keep the psp from slipping.

I didn't even consider that. You might be right. They would have to redesign the entire system for that reason. If they did add a second stick, the PSP probably wouldn't be the same shape it is today.

a second stick would have got me to buy a new PSP. I might even leave the homebrew scene for it, that second stick is that much of a help and necessity.

Play magazine....shudder.
This is the rag that rates Golden Axe: Beast Rider a 9/10,
Lair 9/10, Sonic PS3 9/10, HS 10/10...
I think PSPFanboy is sullying their good name.

Interesting....I am sure this issue will be delt with when the PSP2 is developed....obviously. Why not report on the canceled pre-orders of the Black PSP-3000 in NA. I'd like to know why and if we will still be able to get our hands on it in November. Yes, I know it is possible that they are addressing the screen complaints, but no official statement has been made. Some official news would be appreciated.

It would be silly of them to suddenly add a second analogue stick--developers'd have to suddenly change the way they think when they're making games for the system. Why, it's as silly as, oh, I dunno... slapping on a camera and calling it revolutionary.

Ok, I've read all about the "problems" with the new PSP 3000. I STILL want to buy one for only one reason - I have read the "new" 3000 has video out for movies AND games now to a standard TV set. Can anyone tell me if this is true? I would love to play games on a standard (non-HDTV). If this is NOT going to work, then I'll buy a PSP 2000 and wait until they fix the screen on the new and improved 3000. Can anyone help me who has actually used the PSP 3000's video out to a regular TV?

You can already play your games on a non hdtv with the 5.0 update with a psp 2000. It works I've tried it.

Thanks for the info. What kind of cables are you using? If this works like you say, I'll save some cash and buy a core PSP 2000. I don't need a mic and I'm not interested in a new, brighter screen (that looks like crap). Thanks Sony, but I'll avoid being your test subject for your "improved" products.
