In case you didn't notice, Sony unveiled the latest PSP model yesterday at LGC. Basically, the PSP-3000 will have a built-in microphone, improved screen with faster response time and better resistance to glare. You can read all about it here and here.

In a way im kind of dissapointed with Sony. To me its obvious, theres something behind this, because of the lack of updates its either to make more money or to stop homebrew. Hopefully homebrew isint stopped...

I don't know. The original GameBoy had a lot of variants during its time. There was the Game Boy, Play it Loud Game Boy, Game Boy Pocket, and Game Boy Light. These were available in different colors but all played the same games and had the same inputs. Then came the short lived Game Boy Color which also came in different colors including a translucent purple. The only difference being it had a (very limited) color screen. Then there was the Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Advance SP, Game Boy Advance SP "Mark II" and Game Boy Micro.

Built in mic? What is this? a frickin' DS? not like any games will be able to implement it like the DS because that would ruin compatibility. Kinda BS, since the only real difference between the psp 1000 and 2000 was the size and speed.. oh wait and tv out.
Sucks for psp phats eh?

There is more than a microphone in this revision and just so you know, there are quite a few games and features that can and will utilize that microphone.

Just wanted to add that the PSP has had games that supported voice communications since at least 2005 with SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Fireteam Bravo.

I think it's the logical extension of Sony's relentless tweaking to make the PSP better -- a strategy I remember from working at Daiichi Kosho.
Yes, they're trying to eliminate hacking. Yes, they're control freaks about intellectual property. But they've also been trying to make the PSP more of a convergence device, which is where everything seems to be heading.
For the PSP, that involves adding features like Skype with firmware, then implementing it with a mic; optimizing the screen, then updating its features and performance.
Pity they didn't do the two things people actually want: Add a HD and second analog . . . you know the rest.
I'm hoping Sony's anti-hacking strat failed again, and that accessories (like my Nuritech case) still fit the revised slim 3000.
By the way: Here's the best description of Sony's format problem I've ever read.
"Sony doesn't start these format revolutions, they try to twist them to their proprietary business model and end up losing out every time due to low adoption rates. They push through the problems rather than looking for an opening. This causes them to operate more slowly than the competition who are able to see what they're shooting for and undermine Sony by the time they reach production."

A hard drive would be nice but I'd forgo it if they'd implement some way of uploading UMD titles to the PS3 and allowing full remote play (let the PS3 be the hard drive).
I have no need for a second analog as we have a superabundance of great games that show it's not at all necessary. Maybe in a new product line, but not the PSP.

if they just *tried* to add a hard drive to the thing, I'd sure as heck avoid the hard drive model.

an hdd and second analog are kind of out of the question though an hdd has moving parts and would suck the battery life. A second analog probably wouldn't work because it would make any games that use it not compatible with older models unless they make 2 versions of the same game which would just cause confusion.
even though homebrew brings some harmless goodies the amount of piracy cfw allows is ridiculous and its a little mean to want sony to fail at preventing that unless you really do want no 3rd party support.
i guess bluray will be a failure too then i know its not sonys format but they sure have put alot of support behind it.

Re the HD and the 2nd stick:
1. One has to differentiate between my posting a consensus and subscribing to that consensus. Note that I was careful to say people wanted these things, a fact you'll find ubiquitous if you survey various forums and user polls on the subject. I'm well aware of the various reasons Sony chooses not to grant these requests. I'm merely noting that people want these features.
Also: Note that I gave solid reasons for Sony to have implemented the features we see in the 3000; note that I agreed these features were consistent with Sony's quest to improve the PSP. The 3000 is not some excuse to inflict better copyright protection.
2. The HD (or higher capacity SSD) would serve the same purpose it does in the PS3: faster load times for games. It's possible Sony is hesitating to implement SSD loads because (1) they're waiting to standardize higher capacities at low prices (the wait will be short) or (2) they fear the hacking potential of that feature.
Re your homebrew comments: Note that I, personally, will be glad if their attempt at better copy protection fails again, since I use homebrew apps for music and text editing (the PSP might well be the cheapest de facto UMPC on the market). I expressed no "mean" desire "to want sony to fail at preventing" copyright infringement.
Re your comments about bluray: That format shows every sign of being one of Sony's successes, unlike betamax and minidisc. I quoted that comment, which was made by an industry insider, because I think it shows insights into Sony's tunnel vision and the business/format miscalculations that can ensue. I gave you the quote not because I am Sony's "enemy" or a "fanboy" for some other platform, but because understanding the limitations of a company we admire can prevent us from nursing unrealistic expectations about future strategies and product revisions. Sony's perfectionism, inclusiveness and high-end aspirations make it my preferred company for gaming consoles. Its record company interests, rigid AV copy protection schemes and implacable will in pursuing its aims apart from customer feedback set it apart from Microsoft and Nintendo. I still prefer Sony's products, but I see no reason to feel sacrilegious about discussing Sony's faults.

Sony could have put the microphone and "faster" screen in the PSP-2000. Sony is picking up the bad habits of Nintendo.

Probably, that faster screen was much more expensive when PSP2000 was conceived.

I'm glad I waited to upgrade. But seriously it's not as if this sort of things doesn't happen elsewhere in the world of electronics. Just look at Apple, the Ipod changes all the time, at the expense of current owners. You just buy in when you are ready, because if you wait, you will be waiting forever.

Not true douche, People like to wait it out until it's worth buying. Most people already have a psp, I'm not willing to buy another unless they come out with something more useful. technology always advances, and depending on how long you are willing to wait you'll save some time, money, and space so you don't have electronics stashed away and rarely use again;
And at times I tell myself "aw, shit. I should have waited", because the things I have my eye on will eventually be cheaper and more advance over time.
