M33 custom firmware catches up to latest 3.90 release
It didn't take too long for the talented M33 team to release a custom version of Sony's latest Skype-enabled firmware. With the new Network Update feature of these custom releases, homebrew users can simply update directly from their systems. However, those that aren't fortunate enough to be near a wi-fi point can simply download the necessary files here. (But, considering Skype is the main benefit of 3.90, we think only those with reliable access to wireless internet will really download this update.)

Let's hope Dark_AleX cracks the firmware that Crisis Core runs on as quickly as this one.

Sounds to me like Sony is just "phoning it in" security wise when it comes to updating these firmwares. When it takes DA about a day to get his custom firmware up to date you know either Sony didn't change much or he knows someone on the inside.

i dont really think they are trying anymore honestly. a Custom firmware drops like 2 days after and Official firmware all the time. this may be their way of embracing homebrew.
o and NO on that pun lol. just NO.

I thought maybe he was able to get the older PSP to run Skype, but it didn't show up on my system, so I guess not.

Skype is not enabled on the original PSP due to less system memory. I've heard rumblings of somehow getting it to work by using an enhanced swap system, or swapping with the memory stick, but I doubt it will happen.

I doubt it too. The transfer speed between the PSP's EDRAM vs Memory Stick? I'd laugh but the EDRAM got there before me.

the firmware has been cracked already huh! Make me wonder how different Sony's fw from DA's cfw .... is it simply changing a line or two of code. Is this Sony's way of unofficially supporting homebrew apps .... they seem to take ideas from it.

According to the official line, Skype takes advantage of the Lite's upgraded RAM and lags on the Phat to the point where it's non-deployable. Skype's software is very high-quality as well. Not to disparage what the homebrewers have come up with, but Skype is highly mature in comparison - alpha (homebrew) versus a product that shipped several years ago (skype). Word from a Cisco higher-up was that Skype could handle as much as 2.5x the packet loss that its competitors' products could before degrading beyond reason.
As far as getting Skype to run off the Memorystick, well, good luck. The level of abstraction from the processor is proportional to the speed of access by the processor. Registers are described as 1 in terms of access time; first level cache is 10; RAM is 100; hard drive is 1000. The memorystick isn't wired up like RAM, it's wired up like a hard drive. So, if 100 is acceptable for operations that're run commonly, adding an order of magnitude onto that will hurt it exponentially. You've made the program have to wait ten times longer to do what was otherwise fine. Yes, it can continue encoding incoming voice data, but it will have to keep putting it on the bus to ship out to the DSP (presumably - I can't imagine they'd leave that unused for this purpose), then....yeah, there's a lot going on in there and that one little extra layer of abstraction can and does ruin the ability to competently run Skype.

So, I just got a PSP and love it, but know nothing about what i can do with cracked firmware. Being the nerd that i am i'm going to get the cracked firmware. I found where to get it and how to put it on my PSP but haven't found anything telling me what i can do with it. Can anyone point me toward a page that'll enlighten me?

Custom Firmware allows you to play games without the UMD, make backups of your UMDs, run homebrew games and applications.
Put it this way. Everything you could ever want for PSP that Sony wouldn't put.
If you are in need of a Pandora's Battery and Magic Mem stick and go to S.I.T.H.S. I will gladly put CFW on your PSP.
