The latest PSP firmware, v3.71, is available right now via the network update command from your XMB. So far internet reports tell us that the update does ... well, not a lot really. Despite Sony's talk of "
new, user-requested features", there doesn't seem to be any evidence of any additional functionality at all. Perhaps something will pop up later.
We suspect v3.70 might have held a security loophole and Sony, for once, caught it before the homebrewers did. So while the update doesn't yet do anything visible, you can feel safe in the knowledge that your PSP is safe from homebrew ninjas. Probably.

Yeah Tim, you aren't Sony PR.

Too bad 3.70 is still pretty easy to get. It's highly likely that the homebrew teams will likely be analyzing 3.70. Also, as far as I'm aware, Pandora still works on 3.71.

It appears to have taken away the PS Spot icon under Network on the XMB. This, apparently, wasn't meant for the US or North America Region.

To DurhamNC: You are correct. 3.71 is a localization fix because the Sony servers sent out the wrong firmware type (I think it was the European version) into North America.
You get a GOLD star, DurhamNC!

yeah i kinda read it that the new features were for the ps3 not for 3.71 as .01 is usually a smaller fix up :)
but i could be extremely stupid ;)

yeah the PS PSOT was difinitly for JAPAN,. I mean did the whole page being in JAPANESE hint to anything ? lol seems like the 2 updates that came out overnight for PSP and PS3 were simply to correct errors in the 2 updates that came out monday,.
Guess it won't be long now b4 the PS3 hits the Big 2.0,. and PSP don't look like it's far from the big 4.0 ,. It's an exciting just to think what SONY has in store for us!
And the Tokyo Game Show only a week away!!

I absolutely LOVE how Sony (or certain Sony PR guy here. ;) couldn't tell the difference between "Homebrew" and "Piracy" even if it kicks him in the ball and makes the illegal copy of it. :P
HomeBrew should be ENCOURAGED while Piracy shouldn't. Get your data right please.

so does DVD/CD burners, FM recorder (go talk to RIAA) and even camera in theater, should they be considered too?
Just because it LET you have more freedom, it doesn't mean you have to go do something illegal with it. Self-checkout gives you the freedom to checkout by yourself, does that give you the right to put a sticker for a pen onto the box of a Plasma tv? (trust me, someone tried that and was caught).
Homebrew frees the PSP, don't blame homebrew when a few people decided to mis-use it.

Homebrew also allows smarter people than those who work at Sony to develop functionality for the PSP that isn't normally included.
It also allows for emulators which means I can dump console games and take them on the road. Though most people will download ROMs for that functionality, who cares? Most of these games aren't sources of revenue anymore anyway.
And by the way. When you purchase a piece of hardware it becomes your property, which means you're entitled to make modifications to it. Sony constantly trying to bury homebrew simply isn't playing fair.

I would be willing to be 98% of PSP users don't use and probably know nothing of homebrew. The percentage of PSP users that are actually running homebrew applications is even smaller, and even fewer who are running homebrew are running existing games that are available in the store in their PSPs.
This is a tempest in a teapot. I know all about homebrew, know that I could use it to snag games and play them, but choose not to. Why? Because it is too much bleeping trouble. I can just as easily plop down $39 for Madden as I can worrying about bricking my PSP, and torrents, and all that jazz.
There will always be people who tinker with things in every industry. I really don't get the contempt for tinkerers. I don't think piracy is really impacting Sony's and game developer's bottom line related to the PSP.

@Tim Parson my PC CAN play pirated games so it must be stop'd! I can play pirated Pong with a a table, paddle and ball but It needs to get fixed. But oh well. I guess using Homebrew to put freeware on it is also piracy

people 3.70 was a Japanese firmware that got sent to north American psps by accident, 3.71 is just correcting it. This update has nothing to do with homebrew. Sorry Homebrew users you're not that special.
