Many of our readers have expressed interest in the new music creation program, TraxxPad. However, footage of the game is hard to come by ... how does the system control? How does it work. Thankfully, PSP GadgetZ has provided an incredibly honest look at the game's operation. It's ten minutes of raw, unedited footage, with load screens and menus. What do you think about TraxxPad? Is it still worth looking into?
[Update: Official launch trailer is embedded, after the cut.]

After watching the video, I am actually interested in getting this. What sold me is that you can sample, and export the arrangement as a mp3 (something most music maker games steer clear of).
My biggest question is how does sampling work. I saw in a release that it uses a "psp system microphone" and I was like WHAT!? Does that come packed with the game?

Looks sweet.
In the first video I saw, they apparently were using the microphone from the talkman game.

I fooled around with this app thoroughly, last night. I just love it. A lot of care went into making it. It's fantastic. You can use a standard PSP headset mic to create samples. You don't need the USB / Talkman mic import headaches. I'm not sure if the USB mic would work better, but the headset one works very well. I put together a whole drum set of human beat-box samples, and they sound nice and clean. Plus, I had the air conditioner on at the time! It doesn't have every option you might hope for (i.e. I don't believe you can upload samples from existing audio files; you must record them via the mic), but all in all, WELL worth the $40 price tag.

I just picked up this morning. They didn't have it on the shelves yet (I went to Target and then to GameStop) Have to ask from the employee at GameStop and they have it at the cashier shelves T_T
But I haven't played yet 'cuz I'm waiting form my white PSP. Just sold the black one which has been with me for over a year...

Got it yesterday. Biggest complaint: waste of screen space. Take a look at the Yamaha QY70, micro keyboard aside, the PSP has more navigational buttons and a LOT more screen space, yet the the setup of the QY70 is easier not only for programing [live or step sequencing] but for improving live.
The 1000 samples in Traxx are many of the same sounds just repeated in 4th and 5th chords. [This may be an attempt to compensate for monophonic sounds]
When writing beats you must pick a channel that can then be muted. Why a key combo could not be written for this, I dont know. There is only the ability to mute channels. you can not solo a channel.
In the QY70, being able to mute individual channels or stack solo channels makes for an excelent tool to improve live. Ask the group Freezepop. [they featured on guitar hero 1 & 2, the QY70 is their main instrument]
The pitch bend feature is only applicable at the initial triggering of a note. i.e. Dont expect to fake any portamento.
Also, seems so far, these sounds are all monophonic. I might be wrong, this is first impression.
Concidering the options of PSP I hope upgrades will be available.
Bottom line, if Yamaha were to create a QY70 for the PSP, Traxx would be owned. Traxx potential is there and its great for a musical notepad when not in the studio.

I've had the Traxxpad for a few weeks now. A couple things have disappointed me.
1.) In Myxxer mode it seems incapable of recalling the kits for more than 3 sequences accurately. One of the sequences will always have a default kit because of some error reading the file. My card is only 1/10th full. Also in Myxxer mode you're supposed to be able to loop individual tracks by triggering the four buttons on the right... lame... you can only save two before the memory (RAM, I guess) is maxxed out. I bought a new PSP and the game so I'd have a subway music toy... now I don't know if it was a wise decision.
2.) Where can I get a microphone input for this thing so that I can use the sampler? And why the hell can't it simply resample?
3.) Some built in effects would be nice too.

I've had this program for a couple months and as an emcee, Im fairly impressed with the traxxpad. Its not an MPC2100 or anything like that, BUT, if you want to make beats on the road, or if you already have some production programs (fruty loops, acid, etc) or keyboards, then this is a good addition to have, especially since you can sample sounds. Obviously the best thing about it is you can sample sounds from live instruments and/or beat machines/groove boxes. The ONLY drawback is that you can only sample from the mic. Why didnt they make it so that you can import sounds directly to the PSP via USB? I have no clue. Maybe they will make updates or a Traxxpad 2.0 (get off your butts Eidos). Either way, I purchased my PSP just so I could use the Traxxpad. It was worth it. Especially since a sequencer, sampling machine, assembly program, and mixer can run over 1,000 dollars easially. If your serious about production, I recommend it.
