I've read that the game has a lot of unnecessary slowdown and lower quality sound effects. T_T

Don't worry people, there is an announcement about how the slowdown glitch have been a error of one of the programmers there, no big deal, since the US&UK versions will have that fixed and the music will be at full quality, not the "downgradated" ones you will have in both cinese/japanese versions.
It seems like they got lazy lately at S-E

A friend of mine got the import version, so I tried it out for a few minutes. I can't ready japanese at all, so I can only comment about graphics and sound.
Graphically, the new CG sequences are really gorgeous. I mean, REALLY gorgeous. Art in motion. I kinda missed the extra ones that play when you idle in the PS1 version's title screen tho (Job presentations, etc). The In-game graphics however, are pretty underwhelming. Same PS1 Low-Res filtered sprites, and same PS1 3D engine (You can actually see PS1-era texture-warping and polygon pop-up... nasty). It's just like a so-so emulated version of the game. Why so-so you ask? Because, for example, during Angela and Gafgarion's specials on the first battle, I noticed quite a bit of slowdown... and that's kinda sad.
In the sound dept. we've got the same old tunes from the PS1 version... that being a good thing since it's one of the best FF soundtracks ever, IMO. Sound effects tho, feel awfully dated. Specially the characters' death screams that sound like synthetized mouse cries or something.
That being told, I'm not sure if I'm still excited about getting the US version. Besides the new CG movies, I don't see any effort or love put into this remake.
And that's a bummer, cuz I really love the original.
Anyway, maybe some things can get better in the US version, who knows? But I'll check some reviews before considering a buy, I'm not placing a pre-order anymore.
Hope that little review has answers to some of your questions.
