What? A PSP game that isn't called
LocoRoco finally wins an award? Japan's most popular gaming magazine, Famitsu, recently unveiled their
Famitsu Awards winners. PSP earned a valuable nod by stealing the "Best Portable Game" award with
Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops. Kojima's latest adventure certainly earns the award, with some spectacular graphics and a deep single and multiplayer gaming experience.
While PSP fans can celebrate this victory, it should be noted that
Final Fantasy XII (PS2) and
Pokemon Diamond & Pearl (DS) both won Game of the Year.

How can a portable game win "game of the year" and not win for "best portable game"? If it isn't good enough to win the smaller category, then it shouldn't be good enough to win the big one, in my opinion.

That 2 D battle game? the one that looks identical to the one came out in 1999 on GB?

lol. Portable Ops could have won this award based on originality alone, if comparing it with pokemon.

You people... Pokémon is epic. If it wasn't broken in '99, why fix it now? It's not Pokémon's fault that nothing else is better than it.
I would get a DS just for Pokémon, but I barely have enough time for LocoRoco as it is, and you don't have to level grind those yellow jokers.
I am definitely planning to get MGS:PO when it comes down to 20 bones. Is it similar to Snake Eater? That's the only MG I've liked so far.

Not to belittle the importance of this, but it seems these awards are as much about 'hype and marketing success' as they are a game's actual worth and quality.

neither is Pong, but you don't see us all playing it. Why fix it? because N64 featured fantastic 3D pokemon battling system in Pokemon Stadium and I thought they could just port that directly into Pokemon Diamond. so it will be more like FFIV on DS as oppose to FF2 for GBA.
and THAT is what's wrong... Mario kart was fantastic, FFIV showed that DS is capable of 3-D RPG games.. why are we playing the exact same game we played 8 years ago in GB?

It really sounds like the Famitsu Awards are nothing but a load of crap and deserved to be ignored. They are obviously biased towards crappy non original GBA lookalike DS games. So if Famitsu Awards does not see this or is getting kickbacks from Nintendo then the hell with them and there so called AWARDS....
I would much rather have awards here based on votes from honest to God PSP fans. That would be more accurate.

^ Truth. That's what it's all about. They're not really out to reward games on epirical merits of actual game quality and edge. I mean, if that were the case, then they'd be consider more PSP titles above MGS: PO for such an award. It is indeed all about hype and market succes.
(Note: MGS: PO is amazing. Excellent title, a lot different from Snake Eater - much more strategic, with broken up missions to make it easy for players on the go. I actually prefer this over Snake Eater, in certain ways. However, it should be noted that there's clearly better, technically finer games on the PSP. Don't take this the wrong way, but some of that additional umph to the MGS: PO impact comes simply by virtue of the franchise. The same can be said for a lot of Mario and FF games.)

You people are asking why Pokemon D/P isn't in 3d, when the answer is freaking simple.
Space.
493 3d-modeled Pokemon, each with a palette swap and battle animations... you honestly think thats possible on a chip with such a small amount of space avaliable?

PSP_Rising, just because Famitsu are *gasp* open-minded and are willing to actually play a game before they critique it doesn't make their awards crap.
lol, fanboys. Scum of the earth.
Honestly though, I'd have a tough time deciding between the two. Right now, Pokemon is taking over my life, but MGS was also pretty damn good.

Space is the issue? It didn't seem to be an issue on N64 Cartridge. rendering all the pokemons.
if it's hard to put all the quests (cities, pokemons), then do more than 1 Cartridge, FFVIII has 4 CDs and why couldn't Pokemon Diamond do that? I thought it was supposed to be "epic"
frankly, 1999 graphics, 1999 storylines. barebone internet play that require you to know your friend ID first = "games of the year"?
what does that say about the need to innovate?

Space is an issue when the amount of Pokemon that need to be rendered DOUBLES, along with the fact that extra space is needed because the game is a full-on RPG and not a battler like Pokemon Stadium was.
The 1999 storyline crap is just that ~ crap. I can tell you haven't played the game because the story is improved %100 with this title.
And, well, the graphics might not be all that but if you call them 1999 graphics, you're freaking blind.
Lastly, since I bought the game I've proceeded in ten online trades and dozens of online battles, and I haven't exchanged a SINGLE friend code.
Really, if you don't know anything about what you're talking about, just don't talk. Wasn't that why everyone hates Jack Thompson?

Do they really need to innovate? Is there that much pressure to do so? Fact is, these games will sell a shit load of copies when they comes out here.
Personally, I still kinda like pokemon, but I'm definitely not getting diamond or pearl.

Now, I'm just explaining why I don't like it at all, you might feel different, but i'm entitled to my own opinion.
first of all, you DON'T sacrifice graphics for RPG, and frankly, I was suggesting something in line of what Enix did for FFVIII, take as many CDs/cartridges as it needs to make the game great. there's no sense giving up on one of the most exciting and engaging aspect of the game, which is the battling (of course, if you buy the game for those 1 line convos between you and towns people, I have nothing to say)
Second. The original 1999 story actually makes sense to most people, it was when Pokemon was popular on tv and a lot of us watched some of it. We cared about the storyline and we had somewhat a personal feeling for the pokemons. I remember spending 2 hours just to catch that pikachu. This storyline of bending time just doesn't make me care too much.
3D trees and other rendering. Are you telling me this is the graphics DS is capable of? Then you see FFIV and play Mario Kart. and you wonder, why are we still play a similar game again.. not on GB, not even on GBA, but on DS.
I mean, if Nintendo can (and probably will) sell 10 million copies, good for them. frankly they can do it even with a port of 1999 version. but frankly, this game could've been so much more.

and fact you can't battle online (in 2 D, again) from the very beginning makes NO sense whatsoever.
This game could've killed PSP. so, I'm extremely happy it's made the way it is. :)
