Ever since firmware 3.30 was decrypted, many fans have been wondering: when will a new version of Dark_Alex's custom OE firmware come out? OE firmware typically contains all of the functionality of Sony's official firmware, but with a few additional perks. Obviously, the ability to run homebrew is a must. However, previous renditions of the OE firmware have included the ability to play full-resolution video and play ISO files (regardless of legality).
3.30 OE may not be as fully-featured as previous editions of the custom firmware. It appears that if Dark_Alex's team prepares the OE within the next 72 hours, it will be void of any extra functionality. Working on a more fully featured release will take a longer time--but the team notes that they are running the risk of running out of internal flash memory if the firmware becomes too large.
So, the homebrew coders are asking: to release 3.30 OE or not to release 3.30 OE? Some may want it now, but others may want a better version in time. We believe that, because 3.30 isn't supported by any retail games yet, that the team take their time to make a stronger, more feature-loaded firmware.

Dark_Alex is a very intelligent man. He understands the PSP's hardware very well and also understands the community around it. He knows people want this but he brings up a good point: if no game is requiring it, then what's the point? This way he can take time to make something extremely cool and fun for everyone and make sure it comes out the way it should: without any dangerous bugs or unusual flaws.
DA is smart and patience is key. So there you go.

Agree. By all means, take as long as you want -- 3.10 OE is spectacular, and I hope that they take all the time they need to make 3.30 just as good (or, you know, better ;-). IIRC, some of his releases have dropped e.g. LocationFree support to free up space for his custom stuff. It would be nice if he could test removing a few components, and include some kind of configuration in his installer, so that we could choose which bits to keep and which to toss. I could do without the RSS reader (Google Reader FTW!), but I like the browser. I'm not sure what other features are taking up all that space, but if I could choose to get rid of some graphics or system sounds or something, that would be just fine with me. Just my two cents.

Well, I have a reason to look forward to 3.30: The PSOne emulation is kinda broken on 3.03 for PAL games, which means that the screen is de-centered and cut off a bit. Which in turn means that I can't use the "fullscreen" mode for PSone games. This was fixed with 3.10, but unfortunately there broke other things (I actually can't remember what, but it was bad enough that I switched to 3.03 again). So prolly 3.30 has fixed the PAL-issues.

I assume that Sony will add some significant additions into the firmware over this year and I have fears, that we with the custom firmwares will run out of flash memory before that.

I think they should actually work on a 3.11 downgrader, for now. There are too many of us stuck with a 3.11 firmware, and 3.30 is not a critical upgrade, after all.

Maybe they can do the same they had already done with 3.03 OE? Release a minimal version OE-A, and then add features up to OE-C? Anyway, I'm extremely happy with 3.10 OE as it is. Even the newest games still require no higher than firmware 3.03 (for example, the just released in europe AfterBurner).
A lot of the additional OE firmware functionality can just be stripped apart from what is written in the PSP internal flash memory and loaded from the memory stick as plugins anyway, so this is the worst that could happen in the future.
We (heart) you, Dark_AleX! :)

If you are on 3.11 thats your own fault so don't cry about it now...
I don't see why we would be running out of flash space, you can always dummy the korean font and free 1,5mb with it...
He will release a standart 3.30OE version and will add stuff in the updates OE-B, OE-C, etc...

I'm kind of new (actually, very new) to the homebrew side of the PSP. Could anyone suggest a few sites where I can find more info on it? How do you get started, where do you find the emulators, the games? It's all kind of daunting to me, so any help would be great, thanks.

www.psp-hacks.com I think is generally considered the best site for psp firmwares, downloads and information on how to do so, but I find that www.pspfanboy.com has the best upcoming psp news ....
Look in the forums @ psp-hacks.com and you'll find what you need NUBULAR ....
Dark-Alex can take as long as he needs to to create a fully featured firmware, his work IS the reason we are here and we all appreciate it immensely.
TO ALL USERS ON 3.11 or 3.30 :
As for "working" on the downgraders .... they can't create downgraders for every single firmware, it requires an exploit they haven't or can't found in every version. It'll happen as soon as it is possible, so you'd better start donating money and offering services to dark-alex and his crew, since "your downgrader" for which he gives up so much of his time, takes a lot to create. Show the love for it and MAYBE you will receive.
