Think this is a hoax? You'd be wrong! Joystiq confirmed with GameStop, even providing images from their tipster. Check out more proof, after the break. With PSP's new lower price, will it be able to more effectively compete against the Nintendo DS?

I gotta' ask - how do you save games if this thing doesn't even come with a 32mb Memory Stick?
Oh, also: finally! This should help in selling the PSP to a younger crowd.

This should be the price of the a redesigned PSP, 170 is good, but it still feels a lot more expensive than it competition - the DS which is at 130. It's not like Sony is taking a loss on the psp, 149.99 looks a lot better... When making decisions, it should be a matter of "what will make people buy psp?" price drop, new colors, linux operating system (allowing homebrew),

Hmm. I'm gonna have to agree with Thomas on this one. 149.99 would be a much more inticing number, especially if it was accompanied by some flashy new colors.

Its been ~$170 USD in Canada for the last 6 months at Walmart...hopefully the price drop will come here too and I'll be picking it up for $140!
Dont forget to use a Sony Style CC to get $100 off your purchase...makes your PSP super cheap.

I do not see this pushing sales that much at all. I see more people wanting the Premium version of the PSP.
I think if Sony could sell the Core for 100 and the Premium for 150. The Sales of PSP's would Sky Rocket through the roof. I for one love my PSP and if this were to happen other people would love the PSP too.

this is really great, I don't think the PSP needs to cost the sames as a DS (although that would be awsome)as you get SOOOO much more. It's like saying a Ford Escort (DS) should cost the same as a Ferrari (PSP) thats such a load. This is great for the PSP I just wish it would have come a year ago. I will be real interested in a couple of months to see how sells reflects this. There are so many so called DS fanboys that will jump ship and abandon there DS once they get a taste of the MIGHTY PSP!

OK, I'm going to throw down the gauntlet - if the PSP doesn't equal the DS in monthly sales within 3 months, all of you who are saying that the only barrier is price need to STFU. If it does, then I will write something in one of my articles eating crow ;)

I couldn't believe they were offering it for $199, frankly. For everything the PSP does, for the screen and sound quality...... $200 was a steal. Now, it's $170, and people are STILL suggesting that they drop the price. I know we all want the device to be competitively priced against the big "N", but $170 is PEANUTS for a device as slam-tastic as the PSP. If they sold it for $200 w/ a 4gb memstick, now that would make sense. memory costs them very little.

Looks like Bestbuy and Circuit City dropped their price as well.

Thing is, regardless of what people here seem to think, they have to do *something*, because:
- Despite selling plenty of PSP's, their market *share* drops EVERY MONTH. I need not remind you that the PSP dropped from #2 to #3 handheld in 2006 sales.
- Sales of software are disproportionately low for the system - this is the so-called 'attach rate'. This means that even though millions of people buy the system, people buy fewer games to go with it than on most other systems. This is due to either rampant piracy, non-game usage, or too many 'cool gadget' sales leading to PSP's in drawers. None of those leads to a good place for the PSP as a gaming system in the long term.
This is getting to the 'last breath' for Sony and the PSP - not that they won't continue selling them, but that the relevance of the system in the marketplace is fading fast and in danger of disappearing.
I am a huge PSP fan - which is why I am so critical of Sony. I see them not getting it on just about every front, and it is frustrating to me.

People seem to always want to compare the PSP to the DS...If that were the case Sony would have bowed out last year. The PSP competes with a much more diverse crowd. It's a music, movie, and games device. Soon to allow online downloading of the same content. I am happy for the price drop and it opens the doors for the new PSP that will have internal memory. The PSP is here to stay.

I agree they cater to different audiences but the PSP needs to grab more of the DS crowd. It comes down to the numbers, even if the PSP catered to a completely different userbase (which they don't) they would need to see X amount in sells to make it an economically sound piece of hardware. This lower price I think will help sells a great deal, but it is not only the price, SONY needs to better market the PSP. GET RID OF THE RIDICULOUS COMMERCIALS, and look at how Nintendo sells and markets there systems.

P.S.- The Entertainment pack was also discounted, but it sort of sucked. A movie I'd have no interest in, and a game that is only mildly interesting to me? Where's the pack with a 1GB memory card and GTA?

This is what finally brought me back into the PSP crowd again. I won one at launch, and was completely underwhelmed at the time. I sold it a few months later, with only one game and a 1GB memory card that (at the time) cost me way too much.
Now, I picked up this deal, added a 1GB memory card for under $25, and found a greatest hits game that makes me happy.
I'll see what happens this time. Maybe I waited enough that there's a value in this thing, finally.

Allot of PSP fans say that
"If the PSP Was the same price as the DS DS would
be Dead Shit"
We can see if this is the case for the DS now
I Think Nintendo might be sweating now,
GO PSP OVERTHROW THAT MONOPOLISING CREDIT STEALING COMPANY!
I like this site i can act like a fanboy and Noone gives a shit because DS fanboys dont go here :)
