What big Microsoft news? Sony sneakily snuck out a new firmware upgrade for PSP: the first in
almost two months. Here's the list of the improvements for this firmware revision:
- Support for displaying thumbnails for items has been added under [RSS Channel].
- Support for PLAYSTATION Network titles has been expanded.
- The size of videos that can be played under [Video] has been increased.
- Support for displaying thumbnails for content saved in the "VIDEO" folder of a Memory Stick has been added under [Video].
Update 2: For those without wi-fi access, the update can be downloaded
here. Save it on your PSP under this directory: PSP/GAME/UPDATE.
IGN is reporting that the video profiles have expanded to include 720x480 (DVD), 352x480, and 480x272 (native PSP) resolutions. However, it does not appear as though they've been successful in converting video files either. Stay tuned for more updates.
[Thanks, Reuben!]

Nope, can't get it to work for the life of me. Maybe there are some other weird things I need to do. I'm using mpegStremclip, which is a great OS X program to make 480x272 videos, and no matter how I name them and where I put them, they just show up as corrupt.

No... it doesn't work. I think all they've done is allow larger files, as in, "longer movies"... Possibly because they're about to launch a huge online movie store like XBL/iTunes?

Kind of a useless firmware update huh? Well the thumbnail support for items under an RSS feed would be kind of nice. Besides that I see no reason why Sony launched this.

If it's longer videos, why do they need to put it? Normally, the max length is around 6 hours 30 min.

@ Apostolov
Sony usually doesn't put up information about their updates on their site until a few hours or a day has gone by. It seems their software engineers are faster than their HTML guys. I can tell you though that the update is real as I have connected via my Wifi and I am installing it right now.

Oh yes, av-Watch says it can: "In addition, it expands also the animated picture specification which can be played back. With Main Profile of MPEG-4 AVC/H.264, it reached the point where it can play back also the animated picture of the 720×480/352×480/480×272 dot."

It takes some time before the official site has it (a week or two like the other updates).
But again, nothing much in this update.

If you are looking for a good program to do videos for your PSP/PS3, you can't beat MediaFork. With more options than you can shake a stick at and a price that cannot be beaten (free), it should be on every PSP/PS3 owners HDD, both OSX and Windows. Cheers! Oops, need to give a link hee hee...

The added resolutions hint at a Remote Play upgrade. Maybe the PSP will finally be able to playback DVDs inserted in the PS3. As for native resolution, expect only videos you'll purchase in the PSN to play (such is life in the days of DRM)...

For video conversion: xvid4psp by winnydows. Do yourself a favour and check out this free program. Also has good PS3 presets and custom settings such as "ghostbuster" which helps deal with ghosting on PSP. Good program, I use it all the time with XP, no problems.

@Stef: I use OS X and didn't have any luck with Streamclip either (though it's a great program for converting video files otherwise). I found this one that was made to create 480 x 272 files for use with for the open firmware hack (and it works for me on OE3.03C), but it could work with the new official firmware too:
http://dl.qj.net/PSP-Video-Converter-for-Mac-OS-X-General-Apps-PSP-Homebrew-Applications/pg/12/fid/12465/catid/151
It's an ffmpeg front-end that only converts to 480 x 272.
Once I got it working on my PSP, I actually had to tell it to go full screen, but that was the only hitch.

Yeah, looks like the official word is that the videos have to be encoded in with AVC main profile, which, to the best of my knowledge, requires some VERY expensive licensing.
