The playable version of Sega's
After Burner: Black Falcon at GDC left me more than
a little underwhelmed. Now that the final game is out, critics seem to have mixed praise for Planet Moon's latest PSP exclusive:
- GameDaily (80/100) loves the old-school revival: "The studio captured the old-school feeling of the arcade original while, at the same time, adding enough originality and excitement to make it feel like a cool modern-day action game."
- IGN (79/100) enjoyed the game, even with its poor multiplayer options: "Lots of games have tried to bring an arcade feel to their next-generation efforts, but it's rare to see someone nail it like After Burner has."
- Electronic Gaming Monthly (47/100) agrees with my quick first-impressions the most: "After Burner sports merely decent graphics while managing to suck all the fun out of a once-great franchise."
While I didn't enjoy my time with the game, the critics at GameDaily and IGN seem to have enjoyed the arcadey feel of
After Burner. Maybe it's one of those games you learn to love? The game is
out now.

Well it looks like Sega doesn't love the PSP enough to make a good game. =D

What can I say? I can't agree with your review. I don't know what did you expect the game to be, but I think it's a fine game. It isn't revolutionary or anything, but it's fun.
But anyway, it's a matter of tastes I guess.

I picked up the game got past the first level and I am enjoying the game. The graphics are not the most amazing but the game is fun, fast and challenging. Ace Combat I also have sports much better graphics but is more of a SIM. Either way I own both games and they are both fun in their own ways.

As an EGM print subscriber, the only surprising thing would've been if they had given any PSP game a good review. They praised MGS: Portable Ops (duh), but that's about it. Their reviewers all seem to be DS fanboys. Hell, I think they have it for Sony in general. So, personally, I would throw out the EGM review.

Okay, the final product plays a lot like the originals, which was a very Afterburner-ish factor. The controls seem smooth, and the game is rather fast. It looks crisp, and has an added dimension of plot and cut-scenes.
I think it's done well for itself. IGN's rating seems fair.
