Homebrew developer
Dark_Alex must have some kind of messianic complex, because he is nearly worshiped by all in the PSP homebrew community. His series of "open edition" firmwares include all the functionality of Sony's official firmware ... and then some.
Recent releases unlocked full-resolution video, and allowed users to overclock their system, remove region coding, and more.
Sony released
firmware 3.10, which patches vulnerabilities that allowed the PSP to be downgraded to a homebrew-capable version. A few days later, Dark_Alex has followed suit, allowing homebrew users to gain all the benefits from Sony's latest firmware while running hombrew.
Details on how to download and install this latest open edition firmware can be found
here.

I feel like I owe this guy something. I mean I wish I could buy him a beer or something. If I was Sony I would have hired him so long ago, or at least tried to pay him off it's like he's just mocking Sony now.

I'm suprised that they haven't paid him off. He seems to know exactly what we want from the psp whilst the well paid guys at sony haven't a clue. Regardless, Dark_Alex is a genius and and i am eternally gratefull

@Bones:
You can use your UMD games like you always do.
It's basically the same, but with homebrew capabilities. No need for anything extra (unless you want to install some plug-ins) :o

Maybe he DOES work for Sony. Guerrilla marketing.
With PSP sales in the tank, why not? I am sure Sony profit from every PSP hardware sold - and every memorystick (especially the big ones).

i completely shunned the homebrew community previously. i thought it was so much of a hassle but at the same time, i hated the idea of having to pay for PSOne games i already own again. so i finally broke down and downgraded with the latest downgrader and i could not be any happier with my PSP right now. this guy has some kinda talent. sony is retarded for not trying to stop him. its like the entire Sony corporation vs. Dark Alex......and Alex is winning.

you don't need to downgrade from 3.03OE-C, you can launch it directly by puting the files into the Game 150 folder

Alright, I'm a clueless newbie... Does his custom firmware allow use of UMD games up to 3.10, or is the "official" sony firmware still required for that? Also, is there an installation for dummies guide out there somewhere? (the link pspfanboy provided seems to be dead)

#8 - You CAN upgrade directly from 3.03OE-C to 3.10OE-A. I just did that without a problem. Just place what you would place under GAME in GAME150 instead, and it will run using the 1.50 kernel.
Just make sure you DON'T use any plugins made for 3.03OE in 3.10OE. There is a large risk of bricking your PSP if you do.
Enjoy! :)

I want to try this, but it seems so confusing. I will probably destroy my psp if I do. Is there a way to run homebrew on a 2.81?

If you want to use this, you must have 1.50 or another DX custom firmware. If you have any other version, you must first downgrade to 1.50.
Team reign has made downgrading VERY easy for any firmware from 1.50 to 3.03.
Just read this article. It will explain everything.
http://www.psp-hacks.com/2007/01/31/easy-upgrade-downgrade-packages/
If you have 3.10, you're SOL and probably have to wait until an exploit is found for this version. I probably wouldn't upgrade again until then if you really want to run homebrew and it might be a while. Or take your PSP back to walmart and exchange it for another and hope it has anything other than 3.03.

Sadly thats the only way to do the update. You will need the noobz 3.03 to 1.5 downgrader. I hope this helps.
