Sister, brother or father site Engadget (I never really looked at the family tree) has reported about a hardware solution to help PSP owners convert videos for their system of choice. The ADS Tech Instant Video To-Go is a USB stick format device that has a "hardware accelerator" enabling gamers to convert videos "up to five times faster than real time." The device supports the following file types: MP4, AVI, WMV, MOV, RM, JPG, TIFF and MTP. ADS Tech also claims the device can reduce a 100 minute MPEG2/VOB into a 320x240 H.264 file in about twenty minutes.
The Instant Video To-Go retails for $79.95 and may be a great solution for PSP video buffs looking for a quicker solution for format conversion.

I bought this when it came out last month. It's 2-3 times faster than PSPVideo 9 or Sony's encoder. Unfortunately, it cannot produce 16:9 videos--4:3 only. Maybe they can fix this with a firmware update if we pester them.

Thanks drivendriver! I've been wondering that ever since I first heard of this thing. What the heck is the point of 4:3 video on a beautiful 16:9 screen? Google video has the same problem. ipod video & psp video format is the same... well, until ipod comes up with a 16:9, at least. xP

The inability to fully access the PSP's full screen resolution for video stored on Memory Stick is entirely a Sony choice. It's built into the firmware and developers of video applications have no choice in the matter.
The failure of UMD as a distribution format for non-game content has not yet sunk in for Sony. Perhaps they still think there is value in limiting full screen usage to material purchase from an online Sony store.
If this device provided the same support for conversion to the Divx format, it would be a lot more useful. Like many, I use Divx for my archival storage.

Full screen is easily done using pspvideo9 or pspenc. But you're right in that full resolution cannot be attained until there's a firmware update. Meh, not like I want to waste that much memory stick space on a hi-res video anyways. Maybe after the 32Gb drive comes out... then we'll talk. XD

Because it has not failed to Sony, people are still buying it. Quit buying into anti-sony hype
