Dark_Alex's "Open Edition" firmware has all of the functionality of Sony's official 3.03 firmware ... and then some.
Previous versions of this homebrew-friendly firmware allowed for playing back illegal copies of ISO files. While we don't support such piracy at PSP Fanboy, we do have to commend Dark_Alex and the
latest revision of his hacked firmware: it plays back full resolution (480x270) AVC video, something Sony has been very reluctant to support (with
P-TV being one key exception).
If you're running a homebrew-capable PSP, you may want to consider
upgrading to this hacked firmware.
Downgraders are available for PSPs, firmware 2.71 and below, for those of you interested in downgrading, and then upgrading to this hack. I personally hope that Sony realizes that this is a major blow, and seriously considers officially unlocking the PSP's video capabilities in a future firmware upgrade. Until then, one of my PSPs will be running 3.03 OE-B.

How about unlocking the PSP platform? So that third parties can write software for it. As it is - if I want to stream live TV to my PSP from my satellite PC card - the only option is to use 'questionable' firmware. (I know, Sony does have an offiering that would ALMOST do what I want to be able to; but I prefer to take advantage of what I alrady own instead of dropping another $200 on half of the functionality I currently have).

At this rate, with all these great releases by the great homebrew community I'll have to start hunting for a used PSP that I can downgrade.....Why did I have to find out about this community so late? Curse the 3.00 :(

Bought 2 PSPs in the past month brand new from the store - and they were both downgradable. Both have the new motherboard (for which there is a solution now). One come with 1.6 and another with 1.7. As long as you buy something that comes with 1.72 or lower - you are fine. It will probably be a bit longer before PSPs with newer firmwre preloaded trickle down the retail channel. My is that buying a downgraded used PSP would cost more than buying a new one and downgrading yourself...

The hell are you talking about there is no 1.6 or 1.7. I think you mean 2.60 and 2.70. like Eric S said you can downgrade any psp with version 2.80 or lower, thats all.
All my PSPS are 3.03 OE-B

I sold my 1.5 (bought on launch night) before the whole HB scene caught on.
Now, with all the games and HB scene I'll get another one.

What is the difference between 3.03 OE-A, 3.03 OE-B, 3.03 OE-C firmware? I just bought a psp from a friend and it has been updated to the 2.50 system software. From what I have read I can upgrade to the 3.03 OE, but I'm not sure which one? Thanks for the advice!

to #18 : Downgraders are released all the time and it will only be a matter of time before one is released for 3.10 so just be patient, And when one is released make sure other people have tried it to and make sure none of them are complaining that the downgrader has "Bricked" (Wiped the operating system rendering the PSP useless) and make sure you read the instructions when it comes out.
to #17 : These are just versions, Newer versions have better features and bug fixes 3.03 OE C is what I am currently running, but there is nothing wrong with an older version.
to #16 : See my answer for number 18
to #14 & #15 : Not yet, be patient :P
