Now that 2007 has started, there's a whole lot of potential for the PSP. In similar fashion to last year, I'll give you five PSP predictions, but be warned: these are far more daring than last year's incredibly accurate predictions. Feel free to disagree with me, or give your own predictions in the comments section.
PSP Prediction #1: Sony will introduce a new portable addition to the PlayStation brand.
And it won't be a PSP redesign. In many ways, it will be exactly the same as the PSP: it will feature an upgradeable XMB that features Photos, Music and Videos. It will even be compatible with PSP accessories, such as the headset, GPS, and camera. Heck, it'll even play UMD movies. However, there's one thing it won't do: play games. The device will be set as a competitor to the iPod and will feature a portable hard drive. It'll be smaller than a PSP, feature a video-out, and will be compatible with a revamped PlayStation Store (see prediction #2).
PSP Prediction #2: Revamped PlayStation store features movies and music.
The Connect brand will be abandoned as Sony moves its digital distribution ambitions to the PlayStation Store. PS3 owners will be able to download HD movies directly to their systems. The 1080P downloads will also include free access to PSP-formatted versions of the film as an added value. The PlayStation Store will expand to the PC (but not the Mac), and will offer games, movies, and music for all of Sony's gaming and non-gaming platforms. With unrestricted access to Columbia Pictures, and a large audience of media-hungry PS3 and PSP owners, the PlayStation Store will be successful (a very distant second next to Apple's iTunes Store).
PSP Prediction #3: A popular Microsoft franchise will appear on PSP.
Although there are rumors that Microsoft plans to transform Zune into a gaming device, I think Microsoft will skip this generation's battle and support the PSP with one title from its library (which includes franchises like Halo, Gears of War, MechAssault). They've already allowed Majesco and THQ to publish multiple DS & GBA games, such as Age of Empires.
PSP Prediction #4: A future firmware upgrade will boost PSP speed to 333MHz.
Sony will finally unlock the PSP's full technical potential by allowing developers to use all 333HMz of PSP's processing power (the system currently is limited to 222MHz). Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas Stories will be among the first games released to take advantage of the upgrade.
PSP Prediction #5: Expect tons of established franchises & far less original IPs.
Okay, I wanted at least one sure-thing on this list. The PSP hasn't launched too many original IPs in its two-year life span. Publishers will look at sales and will continue to bring ports, remakes, and sequels to their established franchises. We'll see some of these announced or released throughout the year: Soul Calibur, Resident Evil, and yes, another Metal Gear Solid.
[Update 1: Corrected some info in prediction #3.]

I do not see Sony allowing full HD movies to be downloaded because otherwise Bluray might/will fail. Short HD trailers are more their style.

My prediction is that they might make memorystick pro duo games, Because the UMD has long loading times. And the memorystick would have a little space left over for gamesaves. It would cost the same as UMD and it could make possibilities like 2 gb games instead of 1.5 gb on UMD.

Blackfox5, what's your point? I said they probably won't do full HD movies EVER unless bluray tanks on them.

Prediction 1 is crap. They would keep gaming, as it's the only edge they'd have over iPod and Zune (ie: real games, not ports of the cellphone type junk). Rumor is, as many have heard, that Samsung may be providing an integrated 60GB 1.8" hard drive for a remodeled PSP, the same one that Playstation Magazine reported and Sony initially claimed was false (that statement probably being a white lie to distract consumers, so Sony could milk one more holiday shopping season selling the rest of their pile of current PSPs before retiring the model and putting out PSP 2.0). If anything, they would have a remodeled PSP as the "luxury" unit and create a lesser model that has no gaming and nowhere near 60GB...likely the 8GB from the initial rumors of Samsung creating an HDD for a Sony mystery product.

The PSP can do 333 MHz now. It doesn't need any kind of upgrade in order for it to be enabled. The processor has a variable speed, which was one of the features they tooted loudly when they first announced the specs. The first few generations of software Sony forced an arbitrary limit on the speed of the processor so that the battery wouldn't die so quickly, thus avoiding a few bad reviews.
I have no idea where Sony stands on the issue today, but it's not something Sony needs to unlock before it's usable. Any game can be coded to it now.
If you want to see for yourself, some emulators allow you to choose the speed of the processor to allow the emulator to run smoother. It's all about the software, not the firmware.

Their will NOT be GTA:SAS (San Andreas Stories)
Having played LCS & VCS i have noticed that VCS struggles in places, suffering from more popup obsticles and general graphoical issues than the first. Driving IN the road etc. GTA:SAS would have to be on two disks which I just dont see working, they are more likely to split it.
You buy island one then down load to memory stick the expansions of Islands 2 & 3.

re: prediction #1 - Uhhh, that sounds not only similar to the PSP, but also to the Sony MYLO. You really think Sony would come out with *3 products* that overlap functions & features that much?
re: prediction #3 - Ohhh man, what I would give for MechAssault on the PSP!!!! But what makes you think Microsoft would ever support Sony over Nintendo?

I think Sony must drop PSP price, enable to access the Playstation Store directly from the PSP, give more original IP's like Loco Roco and Lumines, and release SOON new original titles (like MGS Portable Ops) of existing great IP such as Devil May Cry, Resident Evil, Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, preventing similar DS great titles.
Also I think they can use the Playstation Store to rent movies and games like a "Block Buster" videoclub, and also to sell PSP games through the On-line Store.

Your can forget about hard drives!
Why would sony kill off ther pro duo market?
the only people that were buying pro duo cards before the psp was photographers. Now there sells in pro duo went up high. So I don't ever see them supporting a hard drive for any PSP system. If for some reason they do make a support for hard drive, It'll be a PS3 hard drive.
I don't see much being made for the psp this year.
Only thing i see them doing is adding more menus to the psp that will require you to buy some hardware in order to use it. Hard Drive access time will be slow. you will see slow down while playing games. Longer load times. I don't want that. 32GB Pro Duo needs to come fast and cost around $200
I would like to see:
PDF Support
Flash Games & Movie Support from Browser & Memory Card
Full Tag Support for music
FTP Support, Standalone Keyboard support (PSP Chatroom,IM)
And it can go on....

#1 - Doubtful. Sony already released the Mylo - a handheld media and email player. Adding yet another non-cell, non-gaming device to this mix would be even more stupid than have been in the past.
#2 Obviously we won't see 1080P on a PSP, but better media downloads, definitely. HD to the PS3, yes (360 has it, after all).
#3 Sure, why not?
#4 I'd give this one a 50-50. I don't think the clock speed is the big concern for the PSP right now.
#5 I think we'll see original games in 2007. As many as 2006? No idea. But I think original IP's have a better chance of selling through on PSP since they don't have to compete with console versions.
...OK, here's MY 5 predictions:
1). The PSP will get some kind of hardware revision, like the DS did with the Lite. The most likely of all the rumored improvements, IMO, are a mild style/size change and more internal storage - be that flash or HDD. There might even be two models to choose from, with one hitting at, or below, the $199 mark with the other at $249-$299.
2). Much to the chagrin of the Nintendo fans and Sony haters, the PSP will still be 'alive' at the end of 2007 and still selling about as well as it did in 2006, if not better. The library has now matured and has many AA+ titles.
3). Price drop will happen to the older hardware when the redesigned units come out. I think Sony will hedge their bet and only drop it a bit, like to $179.99 or something.
4). We'll see at least one 'killer app' game. Not just a high AA+ title, but a seriously real AAA that will sell systems and make some headlines.
5). Sony will refuse to release any colors other than black in the USA until it launches the redesigned PSP.

Just thought I would correct you.
THQ did not publish Age of Empires on the DS. Nor did they publish the MechAssault title for the DS. Both of those were handled by Majesco. I'm not certain who published them in Europe, but I know that Majesco was the company that bought the rights and funded their creation.
THQ mainly published the Rare created games. The Donkey Kong series, Banjo titles, etc.

My prediction (and I'm a PSP owner) is that the PSP will die a graceless death in 2007. Honestly, I'm half and half with my PSP. From a standpoint as a gaming device for UMD games, I've got to say it's a complete wash. The games are fragile as hell--I've already broken two of the discs and there really isn't a way to fix that. The games I've gotten have either been classic arcade discs (which I've actually liked) or games that didn't translate well (I cannot, for the life of me, understand why Sony decided to make the PSP so poorly suited for first person shooters--possibly the most popular game format, and it just DOES NOT WORK on the PSP).
On the other hand, it's an incredibly device when you consider all the things you can do with it that Sony would rather you didn't. The PSP is the only system I can play Final Fantasy 7 on. My XBOX can't even do that--I've tried and can't figure out how to get the PS1 emulator for the XBOX to run it. Pimpstreamer is without a doubt one of the coolest apps I've ever played with--my entire library of videos is available to me wherever I've got a good enough wireless connection. PSPVNC comes in handy when I want to check on my computer from far away. Not only that, but I can emulate the SNES, NES, SMS, Genesis, TG16, Capcom System 1 and 2, Commodore 64, and too many others to name. That in and of itself is pretty darn cool.
But the problem with all those great features of the PSP is that none of them add to Sony's bottom line. Coupled with the devoted hacker community the PSP has developed, and you've got another XBOX/Dreamcast on your hands. It's a great device for consumers, but the security on the machine is so ridiculously compromised that Sony can't really ever get a hold on it. They can't force firmware upgrades, and programs like DevHook make the problem of game incompatibility go away.
Sony can't fix it by tweaks. A hard drive would probably make it worse. The death of UMD as anything other than a game format makes it even less profitable for Sony.
I LOVE my PSP. I just don't see what my PSP does for Sony. There isn't a "killer app" that's going to make me rush out and buy a game for my PSP. I'm happy with it as an emulation device. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only person who feels that way. With all that working against the PSP, I just can't see how Sony can keep trying to support it. They'll have their hands full salvaging the PS3.

What makes so many of you think Sony will be so quick to drop the PSP's $200 price tag when their PS3 is sitting at $500-$600 and they view it as affordable?

What sony needs is either an original character that every knows and loves, and then to make a really well made game about it. Nintendo has loads (like Mario, Zelda, Metriod), even Microsoft has Halo, but sony doesn't have any character or series unique to them that everyone knows.

If i didnt already have a psp games like Halo or Gears of War would definetly persuade me to buy a psp but if they even do decide to support psp (sometime maybe in the long future) games like those will be the last to come out ...i.e if MS did support psp the psp wouldnt get gears of war until at least 2 years after it came out.
