Well, would you? Sony recently sent a survey to select members of its GAP community polling them on various features for the PSP. This is unsurprising: they've done this quite a number of times before. However, this is the first time the language has suggested a redesigned PSP: would you buy another PSP, just like the hordes of DS owners that threw out their Phats in exchange for the lovelier Lite? Personally, I think the PSP's design is good just the way it is, and being an owner of a 4GB Memory Stick makes me not care too much about a hard drive. However, video out is very important to me. Why? Well, then I can finally give you guys some direct-feed PSP footage. What about you, ye faithful PSP fanboy?

[Update 1: Our readers have voted! A whopping majority of you, 62%, would purchase a redesigned PSP. As long as it doesn't render the current PSP useless, I think it's clear that a PSP "Lite" would go over very well with the masses.]

I wouldnt mind a new design with a hard drive..as long as loading times are short, and the price is similar to its current price. And as long as the harddrives are worth it. I wouldnt want a 1gb harddrive with no expansion..Maybe a 5-10gb harddrive..that excites me :)

Those options are ok, but I want a slideout keyboard,
dual analog controls or at the very least a port to use existing PS2 controllers.
If they would get of there highhorse and lower the price then that would help 500%

The single biggest flaw of the PSP is neither Video Out or Onboard Storage, it is the lack of a second analog nub. If Sony refuses to address this in any redesign they're wasting their time.

how about instead of a redesign and making us go buy new psps, maybe sony should make a dual analogue peripheral that uses the usb. that would be off the shelves in no time. a hard drive would be cool, but a video output is kind of pointless, considering it's a playstation portable.

what if they made a small, portable external hard drive (like the size of an ipod or usb hub) that uses the USB/iR port (might as well use the ir). YOu could have your game saves on a memory card or somehow inside the psp, and have all your movies, music, and hopefully, psone games on the portable maybe 20Gb hard drive in your backpack or pocket or whatever. should sony hire me?

does anyone know that most of the psp docks available have video/audio out and in plugs? and as far as the umd's go... if you use a program called dvd shrink to burn ur movies, it removes the copyright protection, allowing you to load pretty much any dvd flick onto your psp. who ever bought a freekin umd?

yeah, 2nd analog nub is *THE* single most important feature to add to a "PSP 2". If we could only add one new feature, that would be it.
But the other things sound good too.

It's the kind of thing I talk about every time a rumor like this pops up: You can't redesign the psp in lots of the ways people want.
Adding a hard drive will murder the battery (running both it and an optical disc) and no developer can ever count on it being there. They couldn't sell their game to anyone that doesn't go re-purchase their PSP. I'd rather just go get a big memory stick. There's always the fancy new Pro-HG kind that could go up to 32 gigs.
To the "no more UMD" crowd: Yeah, the movies suck, they've basically been canned already, but it's really convenient for games. I can only speak for myself, but I'd rather get my games on discs that my friends can borrow without some weird DRM thing to stop people from stealing them. You know there would be and it would blow. Games distributed on a memory stick would be neat, room to save your game on the game itself even, but that sounds very easy to misplace now that you'd be switching them often.
Video out would be convenient for websites like this, but will be useless to almost everyone else. I don't need to send games designed to be played small to my television or anything.
A second analog nub would be good, but I really think the changes are more PSP2 material. That would be an interpretation of "another psp system". I will be excited about a PSP2 in a few years. Right now, not a chance.

let's face it, a second anolog stick is the largest flaw in the psp's design.
there is no need for a hard drive. 4GB is enough for now. in two years, a 16 or 32 will probably cost around $200.
for the few that would use it, i would think that an external video out device is possible through the existing usb.

This is just a wish list for a future PSP
First of all I would not mess with the screen. It’s the right size, looks great and would just keep as is.
Second. I would keep UMD. I think that next PSP should be backwards compatible. So I would ether put in a redesigned UMD drive where you just pop the disk in as opposes to opening it. Failing that give us a way to transfer the games we bought to a memory card. And speaking of memory cards, that flimsy door has to go.
Third. Memory. Aside from increasing the operating memory as much as possible, hard drive is a must. Again, as large as possible - I would be happy with 20 gigs. But I would settle for less. – perhaps 2 versions ? like PS3 with different drives?
Four. Controls add second knob on the right, make shoulder buttons mushier, I don’t see a burning need to add two more shoulder buttons, I would just keep the unit slimmer that it is now while keeping it the same otherwise.
5th would add a radio tuner.
And that is my dream PSP2 light

The comments demanding a second analog nub are sadly ignorant of the reality of game development for the platform. You can't just slap a new PSP out there with an entirely NEW control scheme that would require newer games to support it - thus leaving all the previous PSP users out in the cold. A USB peripheral still wouldn't cut it - you need the older hardware to be able to play all the games. Can you imagine the anti-Sony anger if they abandoned all the older PSP owners or required them to go out and buy an expensive and clunky add-on to play newer games? Or worse, a new PSP?
When they go to a new generation model (aka PSP2), then they can put a second analog on there. PSP owners won't have an expectation to be able to play PSP2 games without upgrading. But for a revision the way the DS Lite was revised, featuring a few new features such as video output and internal storage, THAT needs to adhere to legacy compatibility specs, and unfortunately that means single analog.
Single analog never hurt the N64... If devs just make better use of the controls that we DO have, it'll be fine. That means fewer straight ports and more original or at least well-customized titles.
Sony isn't going to ditch UMD for carts - don't be silly. UMD has 1.8GB of storage and except for the stupid plastic housing, I think the media works pretty well. Load times for most games these days are tolerable to pretty good and getting better.
4GB is NOT sufficient internal storage if Sony is going to go with downloadable content ala iTunes. My 80GB iPod is about half full because I purchase whole seasons of my favorite shows (especially episodes I missed). You need something with a MINIMUM of 20GB in order for it to be a serious contender in the PMP/media player category. Same with video output. I can take my iPod anywhere and plug it in to any TV and watch vids. That's a HUGE advantage - I don't think the iPods have only seen a 'few' people using that feature.
The display could use some work in the refresh/response department. Ghosting DOES hurt visibility, especially in some action games and FPS. Converted video looks pretty bad, although UMD vids seem to avoid it by chopping the framerate slightly. Whether it's Samsung making them now or still Sharp, there should be some kind of running change to up that refresh.
A radio tuner is a ridiculous idea. Let's stick a goddamned bottle opener and a flashlight on there, too!

The most necessary change for the psp is that of the D-pad itself. The original playstation had no analog at all, its not the end of the world. One nub or two doesnt matter as long as the game is designed well in the first place. My biggest and main grip is how unresponsive the D-pad itself is. Im sure many of you have seen the mods for how to crack it open and fix it, you have to fix the damn thing to make it as responsive as my freaking gameboy was. The analog at least works give me a d-pad that works and stop teasing me with all my favorite fighting games that play the joystick is broken on my system. FIX THE DPAD!!

unfortunately your dream psp2 lite would look more like the ps3 and cost sony a bunch of money per unit if they sell it at 200 bucks. the thing about a bigger hard drive is that if you look at the ipod when it was transitioning, the larger ipods had batteries that drained really fast. i agree that the screen is good, and i dont understand why a lot of people were complaining about how the ds lite was so much brighter.
how about instead of a redesign, they give us what we want in a firmware update. how about this firmware update: psone store, compatible with a dual analog peripheral, compatible with external hard drive
