It's finally here. The Megaton firmware. THREE POINT ZERO ZERO. All you have to do is access Network Update and download the file. (As of this writing, the upgrade is not available on the US or Japanese PSP websites.)
This update includes the following changes:
- PLAYSTATION Network titles are now supported under [Game].
- [Remote Play] has been added as a feature under [Network].
- [Online Instruction Manuals] has been added as a feature under [Network].
- Timed recording has been added as a feature under [RSS Channel].
- A visual player has been added as a feature under [Music].
- 3-speed fast forward and fast reverse has been added as a feature under [Music].
- [Camera] has been added as a feature under [Photo].
- [UMD Auto-Start] has been added as a feature in [System Settings] under [Settings].

Certificate Utility: used to authorize the PSP to play downloaded games, I assume.

Helps you use every feature of your PSP. Not bad.

Chotto Shot coming soon? Hope so.

Best part of 3.0? No more UMD game auto-loading. Yes!

1) I'm SO glad that no functionality was removed! I honestly was very scared that it was a real possibility.
2) Auto start of UMDs was one of my biggest little annoyances of the PSP. I'm sure glad they finally fixed it!
3) What's up with having to have a PS3 to download games?!? Despite the fact that nobody (almost) has one, what about the rest of us who just can't afford or want one? How are we supposed to get games if we aren't lucky enough to have a PS3 owning friend? This stinks big time since I was really looking forward to this feature and I was going to get a downloaded game or two.

Anybody know if you can take your PSP to a retailer and connect it to a PS3 kiosk (if they have one) and download games and stuff?

It was stated in one of the interviews IIRC that the PS1 download would INITIALLY require a PS3, but that later on we would be able to download direct without the need for a PS3.
From reading around other sites it seems everyone has a short memory and is flying off the handle over this when it was always going to be this way.

I'm fucking glad I didn't have to wait a month after the PS3 launch for this firmware update. I'm looking forward to turning the UMD auto-load off and the music visualizer on. Should be good times.

I realize that I am horribly behind the times, but I finally got wifi hooked up and running this week and I am far too excited that I am able to use the Network Update for this one. Wow, it is so much more simple. It is like when you first switched to broadband and wondered how you ever got along without it.
I agree with the UMD autoload option. Can't wait to turn that off. I was using the old 0000 password trick.

Updated to v3.00, and that visual player for music is nice. After a couple seconds, the battery/time indicator, progress bar, album art, etc. all fade away and the visualizer takes center stage. Hitting HOME or SELECT keeps the visualizer playing in the background (the 2nd and 5th visualizer options cause the XMB to lag, though).
Unfortunately, the music still stops when I hit X to go into the PHOTO category. :(
Anyone able to test out Remote Play now that it's functional on the PSP and PS3?

Oh, and a note to what I mentioned above: If you leave the display option on - it's that "i" icon when you hit Triangle as a song is playing) - none of the GUI disappears. That explains why the display was on by default after the update (I never used that option).

I tried out the remote play, the ps3 downscales it's video, then streams it wirelessly to the PSP using it's wireless net (you have to set it up as if it were a router), the audio goes too. It won't let you go to the PS3's game, settings, or users menu, but all the others are accessible. It won't go over the internet yet, so you need the 60Gig PS3 to do it right now. But sony has said that they intend to expand the feature to allow for games and to be able to do the feature over the internet instead of just directly.

Oh yeah, also from the home button, you can PSEUDO-push the PS button and you can adjust the rate at which video is sent to you, slower rate is lag, faster rate requires a better connection.

No doubt someone will do the transfer and upload them while we wait for direct access from the PSP
