For all your port haters out there don't look now because the PSP is about to get a port of a port in the form of Sid Meier's Pirates!. In the game, which was originally released in 1987 and re-made in 2004 on the PC, then released in 2005 on the Xbox and is now scheduled to be released in January on the PSP, players take control of a pirate who must find his kidnapped family members, gain revenge and obtain lots and lots of booty.
"We love the new possibilities from handheld systems like the PSP," added Sid Meier, Director of Creative Development at developer Firaxis Games. "Pirates! for the PSP system allows players to shape the heroic life of a pirate while embracing the pirate's way of life -- always on the go!"
Thankfully, the PSP version, which will be published by Take-Two Interactive in North America and Europe, will feature some new features like new treasure hunts, widescreen display and four-player wireless multi-player, according to Gamespot. Pirates! is a game I always wanted to play on the Xbox but never got around to it, so I'm really hoping this version comes through.

On the Xbox, this game was great; the PC version was good to look at, so I'm finally excited about a PSP port. I just hope it runs on devhook with 2.71, otherwise I don't know what I'm going to do.
I just hope the dancing only requires 4, not 6 moves (PC had 6 moves, Xbox 4)

I played this on PC and it was an absolute blast. It takes a bit of getting used to, and it requires a totally different mentality than your average action-adventure game or first-person shooter. It's more in line with a strategy game, but on a personal level, instead of an army. Actually that makes the game sound awful, now that I think about it, so ignore my gibberish.
But if you like pirates, and the PSP, then you're fucking good to go like a crunch wrap supreme.

Awesome! The 1987 version was awesome. I remember playing that game for hours!

I got the PSP version from gamefly today. Some of the details are hard to see (ships mainly) with the small screen. The way they redid the dancing is irritating, and the controls take some adjusting to. I think the xbox version is still superior but this version has some advantages (being able to save anywhere and not just within a town). I haven't seen the sneak into town changes yet. Load times are excessively frequent, and hurt gameplay.

It is a rarity when a classic game is remade successfully on the PC ... even more rare that it translates well as a port to a portable system. Yet here we are with a game that is a port of a remake - and it feels like it was *made* for the PSP. Of course, I've only been playing a couple of hours, but it sure is sweet :)
Oh - and if you have access to GameStop / EBGames make sure to get it there for $20! Save yourself $10 over other stores!
