The 24th annual
Golden Joysticks awards were awarded on Friday. Unlike many other awards, the Golden Joysticks are voted for by the fans. Nintendo DS fans will be comforted to know their handheld took the "Family Game of the Year" and "Girl's Choice" awards with their pet simulator
Nintendogs. However, PSP fanboys will be glad to know that we got... well, an award that really matters: the "Handheld Game of the Year." It was awarded to the impressive
Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories (whose sequel is coming out in just a few days).
The "Game of the Year" award went to a non-PSP game,
Oblivion. But wait,
we're getting that too. I guess Nintendo fans can just enjoy
yet another version of
Nintendogs.

Nice to see GTA recognized. Despite its flaws, you have to admit it's amazing to play a game like than on a system you can stick in your pocket.
As for the Nintendo Game of the Year, er, so what? I bought New Super Mario Bros. and found it to perfectly underscore my problem with much of the DS library: nothing really new going on underneath all the glitz of old franchise revivals. Been there, done that. If I want to get into a great Mario game, I fire up Mario Kart and SMB on my GP2X.
I think they should've picked a game that better showed off the unique elements of the system like Trauma Center or Phoenix Wright, but whatever.

That's funny I was thinking the same thing about GTA and the PSP except with the DS you at least get some choice.
