I don't think it's too cool. You'll have to check if your PSP allows you to patch it

A friend of mine is gonna try this today. Hope he doesn't brick his brand new PSP :P

These guys have just released a 1.5 -> 1.0 downgrader.

Has anyone tried it yet? I don't want to put my PSP at risk. I was just about to uggrade to the latest firmware too, and then I saw this...

I was starting to think pspfanboy had decided not to cover this. I can tell you that I have tried the downgrade, and it worked like an absolute charm. I was overjoyed. There's also now a version of this with a pretty user interface, for those that find following instructions too challenging.

I've tried it too, worked like a champ. Now I'm looking to correct for my past misdeeds by using devhook to run my newer UMDs (Katamari, GTA, etc.) It's nice to have use of homebrew again, though. The process is really easy. Largely just consists of running a utility to uncompress the files to a specific spot, booting your PSP and GTA and letting it do its thing. The 2+ minutes of memory stick activity with a black screen is *really* distressing, though. I just kept staring at it, waiting for it to catch fire. ;)
