Top 5 on PSP: Racing

There are plenty of new PSPs in gamer's houses since the holidays and I figured some new PSP owners may not be up to speed on what great games the system has to offer. With that in mind, every day this week we'll feature a new genre and list the top 5 games (according to metareviews), so no matter what you're into, you'll have some idea of what games you should own. Day 2 kicks off with a very competitive genre on PSP: Racing.

Top 5 Racing games on PSP

  1. (tie) Ridge Racer/WipEout Pure
  2. Burnout Legends
  3. TOCA Race Driver 2
  4. Outrun 2006: Coast 2 Coast
  5. Twisted Metal: Head-On

I'm not a giant racing fan, so I only own Burnout Legends and Twisted Metal: Head-On (I dig the carnage factor). I did enjoy them both quite a bit though. But what I think doesn't really matter. What do you think about these 5 games? What racing games aren't on this list that you think every PSP owner should have?

If you missed it, you can check out our previous top 5 game lists:

Famitsu releases details on new aerial-combat game

Famitsu releases details on new aerial-combat game
Our close friends at Famitsu (Actually, I don't think have any idea who we are) have just released some screens and info about M.A.C.H. (Modified Air Combat Heroes). The game, which will be published by Vivendi Games, combines aerial racing and combat that may be somewhat similar to Twisted Metal in the sky.

"M.A.C.H. is set in the year 2049, when manned jet fighters are no longer used. The main character of the game, a member of the final graduating class of the Air Force Academy, obtains the military's remaining stock of jet fighters. For one reason or another, he then decides to hold races with the fighters," according to PSP-Vault's translation.

While there doesn't seem to be any additional information available for the game, IGN has the game scheduled to be released in the U.S. Dec. 19.

New Need for Speed Carbon video released

I gotta admit the Need for Speed franchise has come a long, long way since I first played it on the Playstation. I can still remember its god-forsaken turning sensitivity that just about drove me crazy. Thankfully, those days are long gone, and the series is still going strong, which is proven by the upcoming release of Need for Speed Carbon: Own the City.

While the video is light on gameplay, it does show what appears to be the game's cutscenes that may have been stolen borrowed from the Twisted Metal series. It also sheds some light on the story line.

In the game, players must take control of their rivals' territories by outracing them. But watch out because you'll also have to keep an eye out for the "fuzz" who are always looking to spoil the fun. Carbon ships Nov. 1.

Greatest Hits games available now [Update 1]

Great news for you bargain hunters. Today, PSP's Greatest Hits lineup will be available in stores. There are five games that'll carry the Greatest Hits tag and be priced at $19.99 at your favorite retailer:
  • Ape Escape: On the Loose
  • ATV Offroad Furty: Blazin' Trails
  • Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee
  • Twisted Metal: Head-On
  • Wipeout Pure
My personal recommendation is Wipeout Pure: the game features incredible presentation and offers a ton of depth, especially with downloadable content that doubles the content of the game. If you're looking for a real deal, you might want to wait a little while. Circuit City will be having a 2 for $30 sale starting 7/30 for all games $19.99 and under (which includes PSP Greatest Hits and more).

[Update 1: Sony has said that third-party games will achieve Greatest Hits status later this year. Specifically, Lumines, Untold Legends: Brotherhood of the Blade, Tony Hawk's Underground 2 Remix, Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition, and Star Wars Battlefront II are all due to go easier on gamers' wallets.
