What do you get when you add Sony's LocationFree with BeyondTV, a PSP and a dash of inginuity? The ability to watch TV on your PSP! Since Sony unveiled the LocationFree application, PSP hacks like these have been fairly commonplace. From the annals of LocationFree FAQs, we wanted to resurface this particular video that we missed the first time around. The research this fella completed in order to get his remote working on the PSP certainly piqued our interest and warrants another look. The Tonight Show video looks pretty darn sharp, with nary a hint of lag. I do believe, this calls for watching TV poolside.

Channel 4 streams content to UK PSP owners

British commuters are getting access to a very cool new feature ... provided that they have PSPs. Channel 4, the edgiest television station in the UK, will offer streaming programming for PSP owners at one of 7,500 wi-fi locations owned by Cloud. Nathalie Schwarz, director of Channel 4 Radio, said: "Becoming the first broadcaster to make radio content available wirelessly on PSPs will help 4Radio connect with a young, mobile audience, making our programming easily available whenever and wherever they want."

It's expected that this service will expand to offer full television shows, such as the new Celebrity Big Brother (pictured above).

New Xyanide Resurrection screens released

Gamespot has just released a bunch new screens of Playlogic's upcoming shooter Xyanide Resurrection. And if shooting at giant, half-naked, outer-space prepubescent boys is your idea of having a good time, the game appears to be right up your alley.

Fortunately for us, that's not all it has going for it. The game's developer, Playlogic, is using a new video-streaming technology that combines high-quality interactive video backgrounds withreal-time game sceneries for the first time ever in a handheld game, the company's press release stated.

In the game, you play as Drake, an executioner who must escort the witch Aguira to the Maelstrom all while navigating through tunnels and fighting off enemies.

Using LocationFree to stream video to your PSP

LocationFree support has been available for PSPs ever since firmware 2.50. However, because of how expensive the LocationFree devices are (retails for $200 at amazon.com), few have had a chance to actually try it and see how the PSP interfaces with it. Thankfully, this incredible video from theorycast's Kevin Lim goes through in meticulous detail how the hardware and software work. It's a bit long, and the PSP functionality is towards the end, but if you've ever wanted to see a truly in-depth presentation of LocationFree in action, this is where to go. This is the first time I've ever seen the LocationFree interface on the PSP, and I have to say that it's incredibly slick and desirable. Do any of you fanboys want to uh... donate $200 bucks to me? I kid, I kid.

Why you want Vice City Stories: the interview

Ever since the official trailer for Vice City Stories dropped on us, Rockstar has been very actively hyping this PSP-exclusive follow-up to the insanely successful Liberty City Stories. (Of course Rockstar doesn't have much of a choice: this game may be the only thing that saves the company from financial ruin.) IGN recently had a chance to talk to Gordon Hall from Rockstar, and Mr. Hall (obviously) has a lot of good things to tell us:

Game features twice the number of polygons and a new radiosity lighting model.
A new way to have the CPU and GPU communicate to each other was developed so that improvements could be made across the board. A new streaming process and lossless animation streaming allows the game to load more data at once.
"With the Jet Ski you can dive under water and come bursting back up, you can really feel it bounce off the waves as the weather conditions change, you can turn on a dime and really send the water spraying." (Sounds like they packed in an entire water racing game in our GTA!)
"The combat system has more depth to it than any other Grand Theft Auto game." Targeting and combat has been tweaked just a bit: you can now fight unarmed and do grappling moves and throws.
"The soundtrack has over 100 tracks, and is probably the best, deepest collection of songs ever assembled for any one project -- TV, Film, or Game." (But the game includes Custom Soundtracks too if you don't like retro music.)

Call me stunned. I know this is mostly PR hype, but considering how amazing the original Liberty City Stories was, I'm willing to believe that Rockstar is making this game a masterpiece. It sounds to be this could be the best GTA yet... handheld and console. And you didn't even have to wait until 12:01 AM for such amazing news. The game hits America the same time as Killzone. Ouch: my wallet's already crying.

PiMPstreamer homebrew streams video

One of things I wanted in the next official firmware upgrade was the ability to stream video. A reader by the name of Joel stated that "the PSP doesn't have a Core 2 Duo, it has 237 Megahertz. Live streaming video needs mmuch more."

Well, looks like homebrew has proven you wrong. Very wrong. A homebrew application called PiMPstreamer has just been updated, and the responses have been overwhelmingly positive. The program lets you stream movies and music from your PC to your PSP. Movies can include traditional MPEG, AVI and even WMV files. It's only been tested on 1.5 firmware, so those of you that homebrew-compatible PSPs might want to check it out. For the rest of us, I think it's a clear indicator that the PSP is very capable of a video streaming function, and we should demand Sony implement it in the next firmware.

Stream music from your PC to your PSP

Want to listen to your iTunes music from anywhere in your home? The iTunesRSSServer allows you to use your PSP's RSS functionality to stream your iTunes library. Sure there are alternatives, but none are as easy or as free. Obviously, purchased music and videos won't work on the PSP, but the program is smart enough to not display those files. There are a few glitches I discovered in my test: it appears that downloading music files corrupts them (especially AAC files).

With that out of the way, I'd like to take a minute to look how the new firmware upgrade released today has worked, and what it has shown about Sony and the PSP as a whole. While homebrew may be a hot topic, it's clear that most people use the PSP the way Sony wants us to. We got nearly twice as much traffic today on a day with this new firmware than we did yesterday. What does that mean? I think it means that people are genuinely interested in updating their PSPs and getting the most out of them.

The Kotaku Rumor Mill has churned out some pretty nifty PSP rumors. Here they are, bullet-pointed for your reading pleasure:

We knew that David "God of War" Jaffe is developing a PSP game that would make you cry (something that porn can't do). However, the Rumor Mill suggests that his new adventure will go all Half-Life on us, becoming an episodic adventure. Each "episode" supposedly comes in at a whopping 700MB!
Well, if each episodic download is 700MB, that would be much too large for most Memory Sticks. It seems like Sony might be making a hard drive for the PSP. Kotaku and myself don't seem to think that'll happen.
The PSP will be able to stream music and video from the PS3 via any wi-fi connection, a la Location Free Player. Sounds a great bonus for PSP owners, especially if they're paying $600 for the system, a price which might be too cheap.

Remember kids, these are just rumors, so that means that they might not come true. But if they did come true, which one fancies you the most?
