Homebrew on PSP Slim via 3.60 M33 Custom Firmware

The M33 team has done it again. The PSP Slim can now run M33's 3.60 custom firmware. The new firmware has "all the features of 3.52 M33, except the 1.50 kernel support". This means that some homebrew that was developed specifically for 1.50 (e.g. homebrew games that would go into the GAME150 folder) will not work with the custom firmware.

The installation is complex, requiring a Pandora Battery and Pandora memory stick, a non-Slim PSP with firmware 1.50 or custom firmware that supports 1.50 kernel, and of course, a PSP-2000. As always, this is not for the faint of heart nor anyone who hates carefully reading and following instructions, as there is always a possibility of bricking your brand new PSP-2000. As such, use at your own risk. Full instructions for the installation can be found here.

PSP Slim and Lite now available for preorder in the UK at GAME

Game.uk.com have sent out an email today stating that the PSP Slim and Lite is now available for pre-order. Available on the 14th of September, the new PSP will sell for £130. Strangely, there is only one choice for pre-order currently and it appears to be Piano Black, despite our promised rainbow of release-day colours. No worries there though, we doubt there'll be a shortage of PSP Slim and Lites any time soon, so pre-ordering would be pointless anyway.

Still, it's exciting to see that the redesign will be out very shortly. Even if America beats us Europeans to the punch again by getting the Daxter pack released yesterday. At least we have more colours.

PSP Slim Daxter Entertainment pack available immediately

In a surprise move, Sony has announced that the PSP Slim Daxter bundle is available right now. The package includes the silver PSP Slim, the greatest hits version of Daxter and the Family Guy Freakin' Sweet Collection UMD, a well as a 1 GB memory stick for $199.

The accessories such as additional AC adapters, the sexy video out cables, or the new headphone adapter will be released in the following weeks. Also the black PSP Slim solo PSP package will be released 'during September' with the white Star Wars Battlefront PSP Slim package coming in October. Big news, so who out there is gonna be the first person to pick up a new PSP and report back here?

[Update] According to commentors, the pack is available sporadically across the country. In the meantime, you can order it from Gamestop online right here. It is in stock and will ship today (or maybe tomorrow depending on their cut off time).

Limited edition FFVII: Crisis Core PSP Slim bundle coming to Japan

Excited for Crisis Core? And the PSP Slim? Then prepare yourself to be double mega super excited (that's almost a Street Fighter title). Square Enix, king of the limited edition handheld hardware, is releasing a very limited edition PSP Slim for its release of Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core. The console will be bundled with the game as well as a Buster Sword wrist strap, to make you look extra geeky. The PSP itself will be silver in colour and will feature the Final Fantasy VII 10th anniversary logo as well as some artwork of Zack, Sephiroth and Cloud, presumably drawn by Nomura.

The special edition PSP Lite will be limited to only 77,777 pieces, with each one bearing its serial number on its back. The other interesting thing is that it releases on September the 13th, a week before the PSP Lite itself launches in Nihonland. We expect it to sell out on day one, though we hope it'll still be available when we touch down for the Tokyo Game Show. We would pay ridiculous amounts of money for one of these. Honestly. Ridiculous amounts.

Comparing the new PSP with the old

Is the new, slimmer PSP all that different from the original? It may be hard to see at first glance, but direct comparisons show that the system does, in fact, come with a number of significant changes. One can easily see that it has an even glossier look (fingerprints beware!). The system loses some girth all around, but there are a few other more interesting changes to note: the never-used IR port is removed, and the standard battery pack is smaller (how does that make battery life longer?).

PSP Slim Lite boxart revealed

There you have it then. Sony have updated their PlayStation.Blog flickr account with images of the new PSP Slim Lite Tiny (our name, not theirs) boxart. Check out the flickr to see the box for Star Wars Battlefront, Daxter and the vanilla box which, presumably, will be similar for each colour. Though we're assuming the white version will only be available in the Star Wars box, with the Darth Vader silkscreen.

You may notice from the image above that we were wrong earlier when we said there would be a bundle containing only the Family Guy UMD. It appears that it will be included in the Daxter box. As for the Star Wars box, there is no memory card, just the game and PSP. The vanilla box contains just the PSP itself. We're hoping the $199 price is only for the Daxter box, with the other two costing slightly less. We'll let you know when we find out. Did we mention that they'll be released simultaneously worldwide? No? Well, we just did.

PSP redesign revealed; Lighter, slimmer, lasts longer

What a way to kick off the Sony E3 Press Conference. Kaz Hirai has revealed that a new version of the PSP has been redesigned, ready to be released in September. So, what's new in this version? Good question. Check it out:

33% lighter
19% slimmer
improved battery life
video output
same screen as the current version
still supports UMDs

From what we could see, it didn't seem that much slimmer, but I guess we'll find out when we get our hands on it. Overall the new design looks very similar to the curren one. It'll be worth it just for the increased battery life and video out support. The new PSP will be come in several designs. Piano black, Ice Silver, Felicia Blue, Lavender Purple, Rose Pink and a special pure white version with a picture of Darth Vader on the front. They will be released in bundles. One with a 1GB memory stick and Daxter and the other with the Family Guy "Freakin' Sweet" UMD. The Darth Vader design will be released in a bundle with Star Wars Battlefront. Each pack will cost $199. Great value.

The new PSP will also feature improved data streaming abilities to lower load times and will be able to charge its battery via USB. Sounds great to us! Will you be picking one up when it's released in September? If so, what colour?

PSP Slim details leaked?

We're sure that a PSP remake is coming ... but when? Kotaku, in a "rumor" from "several sources close to Sony," suggests that a thinner PSP will be unveiled at E3 next month. The system will supposedly feature a new LED screen that delivers a crisp image in a new, thinner size. Due to new screen technology, battery life will also increase, up four-fold. Amongst other features is a faster UMD drive, 8GB of internal flash memory, and a revamped D-Pad. All of this is supposed to come in at a surprising cost: only $170, the same cost of the system now.

Sound too good to be true? Maybe. We contacted Dave Karraker from SCEA and he commented: "This is pure rumor and speculation, for which we don't comment."

We honestly find many of these details to be much too extravagant, especially at such a low price. (How much money would Sony lose on each system sold? 8GB of memory alone would make the $170 price much too costly for the manufacturer.) We'll have to wait until E3 to see if Kotaku's bold claims have any weight to them.
