The PSP gets the "Best of" treatment from IGN

Yeah, our quality games list might be short, but what we've got up there definitely deserves recognition. IGN's Best of 2005 awards is admittedly a little light on variety, with most of the awards for the PSP going to Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, Wipeout Pure and Lumines, but SOCOM US Navy SEALs Fireteam Bravo gets a nod for Best Online Game, and homebrewers get some much needed recognition by snagging the Best Developer award over SCE Liverpool and Rockstar Leeds. We're also interested in IGN's decision to name the slow adoption of PSP features as their Biggest Surprise awardee. In many ways, homebrewers have been the ones raising the bar for what can be done with the PSP, while all Sony really seems to be interested in is supressing any far-reaching advancements just so they can make more money from Memory Sticks and UMDs.

The excitement for a console is at its highest during its first year of existence. We hope that the PSPs sophomore run isn't plagued with as much supression and thought-killing as the first year was.

1UP nominates PSP titles galore for 2005 awards

We don't know what their criteria was, but we're still mighty happy to note that several PSP games have been nominated for 1UP's yearly Best Of awards, which is great especially when made in comparison to the so-far smallish list of must-have games for the system. The nominees are as follows:

Best Role-Playing Game: PoPoLoCrois
Best Sports/Extreme Sports Game: Virtua Tennis: World Tour
Best Racing Game: Burnout Legends, Ridge Racer, Wipeout Pure
Best Adventure Game: Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories
Best Puzzle Game: Lumines
Best Online/Multiplayer Game: SOCOM US Navy SEALs: Fireteam Bravo
Most Innovative Game: Infected
Game of the Year: Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories

Annoyingly (but perhaps appropriately), four of the five nominees for Best Puzzle of 2005 are on the Nintendo DS. Still, we think Lumines has a good shot to win, since there's always a chance the DS vote will end up getting divided among the entrants.

Readers get to appoint who wins the whole enchilada in each category, so make sure to head over to their site and put one down for the best portable this year (the PSP, silly; what did you think this was, DS Fanboy?)
