Touchscreen PSP arrives courtesy of modder

Don't want to wait for the touchscreen device SCEA possibly has installed for us? DCEmu's Pspzproject obviously didn't -- user jube808, a "professional electronic engineer," feels touchscreen should have been part of the PSP at launch and decided to mod a PSP to include the function. The touchscreen works with both a finger or a stylus, with the goal of eventually utilizing it for homebrew gaming. He also aims to add extra battery life and a redesigned control pad into the mix. Check it out in action in two videos after the jump.

Dear Best Buy, PSP doesn't have a touch screen

Dear Best Buy,

We'd like to inform you of an error made on your website regarding the Sony PlayStation Portable. As you can see, the listing for the Location Free Player on your website suggests that the PSP has a touch screen. However, that is incorrect. Are you, perhaps, confusing it with a different handheld?

It's true that through serious modifications, a touch screen can be implemented on the system. But this option is limited to only a small percentage of truly hardcore users of the system. Considering how you're one of the nation's biggest retailers, we thought you might appreciate this correction, and hope that you remind your store's employees that the PSP does not have a touch screen.

Thank you,
PSP Fanboy

[Thanks, Kevin B.!]

Most wanted feature in next PSP? Not a touch screen.

Pocket Gamer recently polled its readers, asking what feature it would most want in the next-generation PSP. The most requested feature? Dual analog sticks. The older demographic of the PSP has made it a hotbed for more mature games, like first person shooters. However, the single analog nub simply doesn't do the genre justice. The addition of a second analog stick would help ease player's ability to navigate through the PSP's already-detailed 3D worlds. Although touch-screen support didn't win, it came in mightily close, in second place. Of course, if Sony did put a touch screen in the next system, people would accuse them of copying a crucial control feature from another company. Not that they've ever done that before...

PSP gains touch screen support

People that try to avoid the flame war between the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP always jump to one conclusion: both are great systems, each with their unique capabilities... But it looks like the 0x89 development team is trying to blur the lines between the two systems by giving the PSP touch screen support. What?! In quite possibly the most ambitious homebrew modification to date, the team will allow you to attach a device to the PSP's USB connection and control the XMB and specially programmed homebrew applications. PSPTouchMe as it's called will not only give you touch screen capabilities, but it'll provide a new, completely customizable XMB that's far more flexible than Sony's official one. Look at their video support: avi, mpeg, mpeg4, wmv, avc, pmp. Most impressive.

I wish the best of luck to the programmers: it'll be a truly amazing feat if they can pull this. If they're able to complete this project, tons of PSP owners will be able to understand that touching is good.
