Seeing the voice behind Jeanne D'Arc

Sony's upcoming SRPG, Jeanne D'Arc impresses with stellar production values. At Comic Con, GameTrailers was able to talk to Kari Wahlgren, voice of the titular lead character. In the informal chat, you'll see that she doesn't have a French accent -- it's something she just had to pick up for her role. Sony emphasized that the accent needed to be mild. Looking at the footage, we think it works quite well for the role.

Building Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow's story

There's something truly compelling about the story of Logan's Shadow, the upcoming PSP-exclusive sequel to Dark Mirror. Greg Rucka, the story writer behind Logan's Shadow, talked to IGN at Comic-Con about building Logan's Shadow's story. Interestingly, he was pitched to "salvage" the story and turn it into something far more substantial.

It didn't take long for Rucka to figure out that there was a lot of potential in the Syphon Filter franchise: it just needed to take advantage of the story elements introduced from the previous games. "Coming off of Dark Mirror and the stuff that had happened to the character there, I know of was stunned to be like 'Why aren't you using any of this stuff you set up?' I mean, he now has a kid! He knows that he's a dad! There's all this fabulous character stuff here. So, we discussed that and sort of tried to find a way to use the relationships that really have been building throughout this series and turn them into good story ... that's what we got here."

The story puts into serious question the loyalties of those around him. Although Rucka doesn't want to give anything away, it seems that he wants players to stay on the edge of their seats for yet another Syphon Filter beyond the next installment: "We got, I think, a good, good story for Gabe and I think at the end -- I don't want to give anything away -- it's got a nice ending. It's got the kind of ending that I think -- hopefully -- people will be like 'Where's the next one?'"

Konami considering Metal Gear collection for US

The Metal Gear collection is a hot item for hardcore Metal Gear fans. It includes nearly every game ever created in the Metal Gear franchise: the original Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake, Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, and the PSP Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops. In addition, documentary DVDs will also be included. In Japan, the package ran a very affordable 6250 yen -- about the same cost of one modern retail game.

So, will this collection make its way over to the States? At Comic Con, Kotaku's Michael McWhertor spoke to Konami's marketing VP, Anthony Kraus about the issue. He confirmed that Konami was "considering" the package, but they had to talk to retailers about interest in such a collection. If the collection comes to America, it might not be the exact same collection. It will, however, be "very similar."

Star Wars Battlefront to make playable debut at Comic Con

Sony made a big deal about Star Wars Battlefront at this year's E3. So much so, that they had a Chewbacca announce a special Star Wars-branded PSP Lite. We still have serious reservations about the game -- it still seems much too ambitious for our system to handle. Well, will we be proved wrong? (Hopefully!)

Renegade Squadron will be playable at this year's Comic-Con in San Diego, from July 26th-29th. We're still recovering from post-E3 shock, and won't be able to make it to the event ... but maybe some of our readers can? If you're able to play the game for us, please send us a tip so that we can get your impressions.

Now, check out some brand new screenshots of the game, fresh from E3:

Bring your PSP to NY Comic Con, get free stuff

Are you going to New York Comic Con? It's happening today, tomorrow and Sunday at the Jacob Javitz Center. The first 50 consumers to bring their PSP system by the PlayStation booth #411 each day will receive a UMD carrying case (pictured). Not only that, you may see me roaming the show floor, wearing the iconic orange Joystiq shirt. If you can find me and show me your PSP, you may win something from my patented Bag of Swag™.

Hope to see you there!

Comic-Con: new firmware, new demo and new connectivity [Update 1]

Comic-Con shouldn't be such a hotbed of video game news, but this year, it's proven otherwise. Sony revealed some crucial new features of the PSP today:
  • PSP will work as a remote for the PS3.
  • Advertisements for the budget Greatest Hits collection will be released on July 25.
  • PSP's firmware update next Thursday will offer RSS Video feed support for its web browser.
  • Thursday's firmware update will also have a demo of World Tour Soccer 2.
  • There are no plans to improve text entry on the PSP and no plans for a first-party keyboard.
  • Sony's in talks with wi-fi providers to make it easier for PSP owners to connect. (Similar to Nintendo's deal with Wayport?)
  • Video-out (to connect to a TV/computer) is a feature that they're working on.
  • Connect wants to provide video content to the PSP, but can't seem to find the right way to implement DRM. (But doesn't firmware 2.6+ offer DRM video support?)
