3.03 downgrader released [Update 1]

Finally, you can downgrade your 3.03 PSP to homebrew-friendly 1.50. You will need the following:
You can find more info at Noobz. Remember: you are downgrading at your own risk, and no one can be held responsible if you brick your system. Take precaution. Once you downgrade, you can always upgrade to one of Dark_Alex's custom firmware options.

[Thanks, Ben!]

Run 16Mbps video on PSP ... sorta, with 3.03 OE-C

Does Dark_Alex ever sleep? I don't think so, as he's updated his open-edition custom firmware yet again. The last edition unlocked full resolution video, and now Dark_Alex has lifted the bitrate limit, making it even easier to run high-quality video off your homebrew-enabled PSP. Word to the wise, however: just because your system will be able to recognize video up to 16Mbps doesn't mean the system will be capable of actually displaying it. 768Kbps is more than enough for PSP video, but being able to increase the quality even a little is a nice option. Shouldn't Sony be taking notes?

Other changes include a faster OE boot, changeable XMB speed, and functional wi-fi at 333MHz. Sony looks like its sleeping when compared to the impressive work Dark_Alex has done so far.

3.03 OE-B firmware unlocks full-res video

Dark_Alex's "Open Edition" firmware has all of the functionality of Sony's official 3.03 firmware ... and then some. Previous versions of this homebrew-friendly firmware allowed for playing back illegal copies of ISO files. While we don't support such piracy at PSP Fanboy, we do have to commend Dark_Alex and the latest revision of his hacked firmware: it plays back full resolution (480x270) AVC video, something Sony has been very reluctant to support (with P-TV being one key exception).

If you're running a homebrew-capable PSP, you may want to consider upgrading to this hacked firmware. Downgraders are available for PSPs, firmware 2.71 and below, for those of you interested in downgrading, and then upgrading to this hack. I personally hope that Sony realizes that this is a major blow, and seriously considers officially unlocking the PSP's video capabilities in a future firmware upgrade. Until then, one of my PSPs will be running 3.03 OE-B.

Firmware 3.03 decrypted

This Christmas is proving quite fruitful for homebrewers. Custom firmware 3.02 has all the functionality of Sony's official release, but can also play ripped PSX games. News is spreading that Sony's latest, 3.03, which introduced a few new security measures, has already been cracked.

For clarification purposes, this doesn't mean that you'll be able to run homebrew on 3.03. Nor does this mean you can downgrade from 3.03. However, homebrew-enabled PSPs can revel in the potential to emulate 3.03 in the future.

More PSone titles... in Japan, at least

The dozen or so people that own both a PLAYSTATION 3 and PSP in Japan will be able to play new old PSone games tomorrow, using the newly released 3.03 firmware. The titles, all at a low price of 525 yen, include:
  1. R-TYPE
  2. Migi Hadari USA
  3. Tail of the Sun
  4. DINO CRISIS
  5. Global Force: Shin Sentou Kokka
  6. Gekisou Tomarunner
  7. Little Princess (Marl Kingdom)
  8. The Combini (Ano Machi o Dokusen seyo)
  9. Mister Driller
Wasn't Mr. Driller supposed to be out at launch? I wonder what PSone games are heading over to the states (if any).
