New DevHook emulates 3.01 firmware

Just in time for PSone downloads, it appears that Sony has been completely outwitted by the homebrew community yet again. Less than a week after its previous update, DevHook now emulates the 3.01 firmware for users with homebrew-capable 1.50 PSPs. Until the next major firmware upgrade, it appears as though Sony's anti-homebrew efforts have been completely defeated.

PSone downloads now available for American PS3 owners [Update 2]

I'm currently busy fighting demon ninjas in hell, so there's no way I can confirm whether or not this news is true. CONFIRMED: According to the Loot Ninja, PSone downloads are now available for American PLAYSTATION 3 owners. The following titles are available, all at $5.99 each:
  • Cool Boarders
  • Crash Bandicoot
  • Hot Shots Golf 2
  • Syphon Filter
  • Tekken 2
Most games are over 400MB, so you'll need a hefty Memory Stick to get your gaming session on. The games require firmware 3.01, but that won't be a problem for anyone, including homebrew users.

[Update 2: A NeoGAF user has posted pictures of his PSP running Syphon Filter. It can be pretty informative.]

3.01 update? Blame Jeanne d'Arc!

According to Game Watch, the impressive-looking Jeanne d'Arc may be responsible for the insanely quick 3.01 firmware turnaround. 3.0 seems to have a glitch where the UMD load times were significantly increased for that game. Apparently, some users were experiencing game crashes, where players would be stuck at Loading screens. Strange. Could any other games be afflicted by strange 3.0 firmware glitchiness?

Homebrew FTW: firmware 3.01 decrypted

Just to help you keep track of it all:

Nov 20 - Firmware 3.00 available.
Nov 21 - Suspicious "security issue" found.
Nov 22 - Firmware 3.01 available.
Nov 22 - Firmware 3.00 and 3.01 decrypted.

Noobz, a popular PSP coder, proudly announced that the newly released 3.01 firmware has been decrypted. What does that mean? It means the homebrew community is working harder, and faster, than ever, to keep up with Sony. With the firmware decrypted, hopefully it won't be too long until something tangible appears for homebrew users.

So when do you think firmware 3.02 will come out? Tomorrow?

Sony releases new 3.01 firmware, a day after 3.00

Firmware 3.00 isn't even available on the US website yet, and it looks like there might be a reason for it. 3.01. Gyuh? Yes, in just one day after 3.00's release, Sony has released yet another firmware upgrade: 3.01. It appears Sony somehow discovered a security hole in the firmware hours after the previous major release.

If for some crazy reason, you desperately need to have the latest firmware, and remove the possibility of homebrew on your system, set your PSP to run Network Update. Just know that there's no other benefits to running the update other than this security revision.
