Unless you've been hiding under a rock, you know that PSP is getting Skype functionality later this month. But how will it look on your PSP? This new video from GameTrailers will show you how to use this free VoIP feature. It integrates fully into the XMB, making it seem like a natural fit to the PSP experience.

Using the old headset? Why didn't Sony think and include bluetooth in the PSP-2000? I don't want that wire hangin by my face during a convo.

ok... this is for all PSP 2000 Haters:
GET USED TO THE IDEA THAT TECH CHANGES!
The new psp was able to get an XMB section that it's sleek, easy, and it blends in!
other hacks or programs are a pain in the butt to set up for ppl that are normal, and you cannot acces them easily. and it doesnt look good. face it! the phat can find other stuff that are good, but the new program will work properly with the revamped system, and we will see a future of things that the new RAM can cover unlocking the PSP tru potential... in an official manner... (not to be as an insult to hackers, which make ppl's lives easier.

Early adopters get screwed, it's more or less the nature of evolving technology. I've got nothing against people with the "OG" gear since I started off with that model too, but hey. Just go get the slim or keep your PSP Brick (personally my preferred nickname to it instead of PSP Phat. More thematic to the PSP's history).
Something more relevant to this post: What about that one peripheral that was shown before, the mic that connected via the top USB port? No go for that, or do they wanna eviscerate stock on the headset before releasing the mic?

Hey Shinogu, on QJ they're saying the mic you're talking about will be released but I think it's only in Japan. It looks like the headset/remote combo is the solution for the US.
One more thing I'd like to add: I really like the PSP's interface for Skype. It's so simple and easy to use. Sony has done a great job with that.

i think they wii try to get the headset out in feb and in the meantime, Japan will test the new mic. it looks simple n-off, but since i have the Chotto Shot Cam, hopefully i can use it to make calls! Skype DOES support video-mail... i think...

Turns out the mic has always existed, only as a pack-in with the Talkman apps.

I might actually use this. The rates are lower than my current GoPhone (I rarely use the phone, so it's cheaper than having a giant contract and wasting hundreds of minutes) and I carry my PSP everywhere I go. The problem is that I haven't heard if it includes voicemail, which I desperately need since I can't have my phone with me on the job.

One problem I have with the whole skype/psp addition, is that you need to have an internet connection available while using it, that sort of slaughters my idea to use my beloved psp as a cellphone.
