Due to the overwhelming success of the PSP, Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu surveyed 68 of its retail partners for their thoughts on the state of the PSP. The survey revealed a number of interesting factoids. For example, Piano Black is the best selling system (17.4%) while Rose Pink is the worst (6.9%). Unsurprisingly, Crisis Core ended up being the top seller of the month, which caught 62.7% of retailers off guard -- they couldn't predict sales would be so strong.
Although Crisis Core sold so well, it was actually the 1seg, retailers report, that inspired the most PSP sales. However, in spite of the system's current success, 43.3% of retailers surveyed do not believe PSP momentum will continue.
The retailers are worried about the lack of big titles coming up for the system. More games like Monster Hunter are (obviously) needed. Some other suggestions included: games that support the 1seg (how would that work?), record functionality for the 1seg, and new colors that look different than DS's offerings. Supposedly, Japan's software lineup on PSP leaves something to be desired as well.

Yeah I agree with Alien. This was expected, but I'm glad that the PSP has shown it can top the DS if it wants to.
That month wasn't so much about making sales, but it was about making a point.

Isn't the PSP's fanbase already ok as it is? That little kids get a DS over a PSP is no shocker, and IMO, it's better. I hate kids. And I like the fact of the PSP being a more "elite" machine.

I really don't care if the psp is first place in sales or last because i like and enjoy it so much, besides my hand sores. But i use it when travel, staying in hotel, home..everywhere.

jesus torres,
I think he meant when the effort is put in or a decent game is released. And yes, PSP has been neglected for far too long by Sony. It is a far better machine than the DS in every way, but many consumers do not understand that.

Well, these retailers 'couldn't predict' THIS surge, so why does Famitsu place expect their readers stock in their ability to predict sales from this point on?
I'll tell ya - Famitsu doesn't really like the PSP. They regularly rate the games well below par, even popular titles. They are positively notorious among Japanese gamers as giving Nintendo preferential reviews, almost to the point that their DS reviews are unreliable for real critique. In fact, their very name is eerily similar to Nintendo's own Famicom.
The PSP isn't going to outsell the DS. The good thing is, it doesn't have to. At this point, the PSP has proven it can nail the top sales and achieve better attachment. That's what publishers and the beancounters who the execs listen to want to see.
Me, I don't care if it's #1 or not. Competition keeps things fresh, like the PSP-2000. As long as Nintendo and Sony are slogging it out in the handheld market and as long as both are still in the running, we'll see efforts made by both companies to keep the hardware and software compelling.
