Color us shocked, but the one-two punch of the redesign and Crisis Core has made a serious impression on the Japanese. The slimmer PSP-2000 has sold over half a million units in less than two weeks. With numbers like that, you'd think that there was a brain training game somewhere hidden in the system.
We predict good things to come as a new Gundam game hit Japanese store shelves yesterday. We hear that they're somewhat fond of that franchise.

Yay PSP! Boo everyone else!
Seriously though, I hope this trend continues. It would be nice to see a fire get lit under Nintendo's ass and witness their first acts of genuine competition in the handheld arena after nearly twenty years.

What competition ... the PSP is the only handheld that could ever achieve this ... meaning a place aside of Nintendo ... man I hope that the sales will keep up like this for a couple more weeks :D

Finally some PSP love. This scrappy little handheld can hopefully stop living in the DS's shadow. It's sold what, almost 30 million now? I really don't think that's a failure. And please, Square, get Crisis Core to America ASAP. We need this game!
I just wish the PSP-2000 launch went better here. Floating release dates and no AAA game to push things over the edge (though I love Jeanne D'Arc and Dead Head Fred).

im no corporate love monkey, ill whore myself to any company if the product is good and cheap enough ;)
lets hope the success continues and this brings about some more cool games. even though personally ive never lacked good games on the PSP, but i do for a select quality few and dont just collect games.

I have tried to be objective for a long time with all this DS vs PSP crap (which isn't always that easy). And i really tried to like the DS although i already owned two PSPs. Fanboy wars are just pathetic and childish. So I played once with the DS from my 8 year old little niece and I can see why a certain group of audience just loves the DS. It's a cute and smart little device. But personally i would not really want a DS myself. I think it's just meant for a way younger audience and the majority of games for DS confirms this. The PSP is literally a much more mature device, which doesn't only excell at playing games but works just magnificent as a multimedia player and webbrowser. I use my PSP daily to surf the web in the morning or check my email, even before I actually turn on my computer. I have an iPod too but never use it anymore, but keep my favorite music on my PSP. A 4GB card is really pretty sufficient to keep a nice music collection on plus some videos.
I never even bought the PSP for the games to be honest. I was just impressed by all the other capabilities is has. But once i bought my first PSP game i was litterally hooked and became a true video game addict. I've become a complete convert while i used to be someone who never even liked video games at all.
I agree that the PSP deserves much better publicity since it's just a tremendous gadget in it's own right that shouldn't even have to compete or be compared with anything else at all. People who still say it's a failure or say there are no good games for the PSP are completely ignorant or probably never even really tried to play with a PSP. To me DS games feel like the old games i used to play decades ago. The PSP feels like it's decades ahead of the DS. But I start to sound like a fanboy, which i really don't want. All this fanboy behaviour is based on insecurity and the need to get confirmation that they bought the right product. That's all understandable and it's a known fact that all consumers need this so much. Including myself too of course ;)
So I'm glad to see that the PSP is slowly gaining more momentum again and more people finally start to realize what a powerful and fun product it is. I hope this increased popularity we see now will also contribute in even more and better support from game developers to make even better games for the PSP. They see that their investments will pay back due to a larger user base. I think we all will benefit from it the more popular the PSP gets. So this is all incredibly good news for all of us :) At least i'm glad to see my investment of almost 80 UMDs by now wasn't for nothing and the PSP isn't by far dead yet!
I don't really know anymore why i started writing all this though... oh yeah now i remember why. because i wanted to say that the PSP FRIGGIN' OWNS THE WORLD!!! ;) heheh just kidding lol
I know i know, i'm just guilty of fanboy behaviour myself now too. So sue me ;)

Not surprising that one of the most beloved (to the Japanese) franchises coming to PSP boosts sales like this.
"if the new psp don't keep messing up with cracks, umd doors messing up and other things. then it will be good for sony."
I've heard of no such problems. Link?

to those who have not held a new one ... it really REALLY is different .. i laughed at my brother for trading then when he did a side by side comparison of the load time in monster hunter 2 and he was 10 seconds faster i was sold because THAT alone has been my gripe with the PSP.

I wonder what the US numbers are like? I don't have a PSP yet, and I definitely want one; especially the new light & slim redesign. They fixed some basic design issues with the original that concerned me.

I've never expected the psp to beat nintendo, but only sony could achieve real competition against them! With this, the next generation of handhelds will be a formidable match!

I just bought the PSP Slim and the battery cover is really loose. I heard that other people on the web also have this problem. Anyone else's battery cover loose?

I totally agree with FD. I bought a DS about five to six months ago, expecting something different and exciting from Nintendo. Granted, I was quite impressed with the DS at first, but as time passed along I tried looking at games and didn't really find any based on my interests. I researched the DS a bit before I bought it and even had a list of games I wanted to get, but after playing it over a family member's house (I had FF3 (GBA), Pokemon Diamond, and Jump Ultimate Stars with me) I got really bored and gave up on DS. It just wasn't my system since the games were geared towards a younger audience. Afterwards, I started looking at the PSP and decided that if Sony's system couldn't do it for me, then no more handheld gaming for me. I got the Daxter Entertainment Pack about five weeks and played Tekken: Dark Resurrection for the first time, and even though it was exactly like Tekken 5, I've loved every minute of it. Add Monster Hunter Freedom 2, Hot Shots Golf, SFA 3 Max, and other options (Downloadable demos, FTW!), and I can argue that this is the greatest handheld system of all time. The PSP is better than I expected.

Ive had my psp for more than a year. Since the time i purchased it, it has never left my side. Even if there were no good games i still use it as my music and video player. Whenever im at the mall or cafe's id use the internet browser to check my mails and surf a little bit. I like the new psp but i love the older one better since i think it has more character. My brother has bought the slim one this week and his only gripe is since we dont have an hd-tv he cant play games on a bigger screen. I dont want to replace my psp, and since we have so many available parts and repair shops here i think this one is gonna stay with me for a very long time.I do welcome the slim psp and im glad that it has helped secure sony's foray into the handheld business. Here in my country the psp community has grown so much that every customer we has a relative or offspring that has one, even my brothers friends all have psp's so we usually gather at our house and play many games together. Im not a fanboy since ive had so many systems even from the early days of video gaming from atari to nintendo and sony.....I guess im a very old gamer hehe and since the psp can emulate the old games that i still like up to now...i dont think i can never let go of this funky little gadget. I am very certain this year and next year will be the best time to be a psp owner. And since most japanese already has DS's i think the psp userbase will grow much stronger and show a lot of people that this is a great handheld to have. Viva la PSP!!!
