It's true that Japan has far more colors to choose from than the upcoming American launch of the redesigned PSP. However, did you know that Japanese customers are facing serious restrictions too?
Sofmap in Akihabara has been meeting such wild demand for the redesigned PSP that customers are limited to only one system pre-order ... and aren't given the choice to pick a color. Amazon Japan pre-orders are already closed due to overwhelming demand.
It's great to see PSP start picking up the spotlight in a territory that's typically been dominated by a different handheld.

Anyone think I'll be able to pick one of these puppies up in-store here in Canada? Or should I just pre-order *sigh*.

It would be nice if the PSP outsold the ds, but they are still not the same market. It's like saying I hope they sell more Porsche's/(PSP) and than (insert Economy Car here)/(DS) in any given city, not the same market. PSP is here to stay, it's proven itself and it is growing everyday.
Long Live the Mighty PSP!

The sign says "regradless the colour." A customer can only order one, reardless what colour the system is, not that the customer cannot choose what colour he/she gets.
Also focuse of the above mentioned Japanese article is not the fact that there is the restriction. The writer is just wondering why the Sofmap in Akihabara is giving "supply shortage" as the reason for the restriction, before even a single PSP Slim actually hits the market. He implies if Sony is orchestrating the situation to cook up false sense of scarcity;
thus making PSP Slim more desirable in the eyes of Japanese customers. Japanese people loves limited or scarce items.

You mean like what Nintendo supposedly did with Wii.

Alien, in the early days of 2005, the PSP DID outsell the DS, for quite a few weeks at a stretch. Months, even. It really wasn't until the Lite came out that the DS really pulled away.
I like the DS, but that early Phat version just plain sucked.
Saigon - heh. Exactly. False sense of scarcity? Wii, much?
And as much as I agree that the PSP and DS are two apples to oranges devices, they still compete in much the same market. The PSP needs to appeal to more nongamers, kids and females - which these new colors demonstrate that Sony is aware of. It should be an interesting Christmas buying season, indeed.

No. The fact that it doesn't is why I like it so much.
The fact that DS does is why I hate it so much

psp_amigo, First of all DS games are completely unique, as in they have not one screen like the PSP, but two screens, secondly, and most importantly, the overwhelming majority of the games use the stylus, similar to the way that PC gamers use a mouse, and the built in microphone for gameplay, that's one of the reasons why people are so hooked on the DS in the first place, and why the PSP is a very distant second place in handheld sales.
For every PSP sold, there's over three DS systems sold. To date, there's been over 60 million DS units sold, At this rate, the DS could catch up to the PS2 as the biggest selling video gaming product in history, along with the Gameboy advance that has already sold over 75 million units worldwide The DS has unique gaming features like the stylus which would be impossible to emulate on ANY other gaming system. That's why DS games can't be used on a Wii system.
Oh, and yes, once again, the DS can do just about everything the PSP can with the Max Media Player, it can play movies, play music, play LEGAL emulated games, and of course, it plays DS games, that a PSP would never play effectively.
Heck, it's more realistic to play a PSP game on a DS than vice versa.

I would never buy a DS. I'm not 12 years old you know ;) People fail to realize that the DS sales are huge because kids are buying them. They probably outnumber us adults 10:1. I rarely see adults playing the DS. The only way I would buy a DS is for Mario. All the other games are not that appealing to me and the PSP games are better graphics wise.
