No, you're not looking at footage of the original Sonic Rivals. This is the sequel -- and it looks exactly like its predecessor. Distressingly, the framerate of this video is choppy, and the gameplay seems even more barren than before. Maybe it was too early to show this, but our confidence in Sonic Rivals 2 has taken a huge hit.

I saw recently a video of Sonic Xtreme ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzvS_beXtXk#WNhba1GfJq0 ). That game could have been so great. Why the hell doesn't Sega revive the project on PSP or DS by themselves, instead of shoving Backbone money down the throat for something completely mediocre like Sonic Rivals. Or hell, give it to Dimps - they certainly did a better job with Sonic Rush, than Backbone with Rivals.

So you just hold down the forward button and the game takes care of the rest?

Framerate is off, but I'm sure they'll fix that. The spikes, wall climbing, twisting platforms, vines, and spinning orbs all look like new elements to me. It's a cool little platformer with old-school gameplay, and it does appeal to a younger crowd, but also has a lot of nostalgia for us older dudes.

All they need to do is add music and speed up the characters, then it will be fine.
