We cast a huge shadow of doubt over Kotaku's supposed findings of a slimmer PSP. We know it's happening ... we just don't know when, or how. Rumor Reporter has seen its fair share of video game rumors -- and has for the most part, thoroughly debunked them, Mythbusters-style. They've earned their credibility, and we find that their redesigned PSP concept makes a lot more sense:
"My undisclosed sources tell me that Kotaku's report is mainly factually inaccurate ... [but a] new slimmer PSP is indeed in the works." The redesign, according to Rumor Reporter, supposedly has a slot loader replacing the UMD drive. The entire system will have "an even 'cleaner' look, much like the DS Lite." The system will feature the same sized screen (something Sony has been adamant about), but will have a "sidekick-esque" flip-screen, reducing the overall size of the system.
This "probable" rumor concludes with the same prediction that Kotaku made: the redesigned system will cost consumers the same price as the current model. However, unlike Kotaku, Rumor Reporter is stating that the system will only have 4GB of memory, as opposed to 8GB. With E3 only a few weeks away, we'll see which one of these redesign rumors are the most accurate.

I agree , 4 gig is much more plausable than 8 gig . Why ? Because building in an 8 gig memory is at least 3-4 times as expensive as building in a 4 gig one . IMO , if the 8 gig sticks would loose some value , a 1-2 gig built in memory would be enough :)

No UMD drive will lead to outrage from all current PSP users. Sony will never commit to it, especially when the games(many of which are big titles) are still being put on them.

@Merc
A slot loading drive will still use umds.
4gb sounds more realistic than 8gigs...I think.

Yep merc25 , you are confused a bit . A slot loading UMD driver still uses UMDs , just that you dont have to open a clap , because you will just push in the UMD :)

The sidekick esque flip out screen makes absolutely no sense, unless the PSP is the size of the actual screen and reveals the controls when you flip it out, something which I doubt Sony would do. Thats just one more thing to get broken. The slot loading drive makes perfect sense, something else that would make perfect sense is a second analog stick. Thats the biggest downfall with the PSP IMO. Add a second analog and you have FPS and 3rd person games that would play like a dream.

That SOUNDS more realistic but that doesn't necessarily mean it's true. Anybody can "de-sensationalize" a rumor to make it sound more true. That said this sound pretty cool, I'm just not sure about the "sidekick-esque" flip-screen.

Paul, your weird attachment to two analogues is your biggest downfall. The PSP has shown by its hundreds of great games that your want is not needed - it works and works great as is.

Doing away with the current pop-up UMD drive in favor of slot loading? Perfect. Less chance to break hinges or the door(A little worried about stuff getting in, but I'm sure that's been taken care of), but a flip screen? Ack! Moving parts are bad! Oh well, I'll have no reason to get one till a firmware exploit is found for whatever version they'll ship with.

Hmm...4GB does appear to be more realistic and should be big enough. I'm not sure if a slot drive would be the best idea, but if they can do so fairly cheaply and with a smaller size than the current drive I can see it working. As for the screen, I think a "sidekick-esque" flip-screen would be unnecessary and a slide-up screen would be good enough. Also, it would seem logical to put a keyboard under the screen wouldn't it? It would be nice to have a second analog stick, but that isn't gonna happen until the next-gen PSP.

I agree with "required", I play ps1 and ps2 games since many years... And I have no trouble with one analog stick. I play a lot MGS:Portable ops, Daxter, Socom and many sport games without any problem.

Oh, I see what you mean instead of being a door opening style (like the PS, PSone, and PS2slim), it will be out in the open (like the N64, Genesis, and the entire game boy line).

"sidekick-esque" flip-screen" does this mean a built in screen protector?? I am not a fan of the DS Lite but I have always liked how from the Gameboy SP on there was built in screen protector. A keyboard and a port that allows you to use an external ps2 gamepad would solve many complaints.

There is a reason that no console FPS came even *close* to being a rival to mediocre PC FPS until the consoles started having dual sticks. QED.

yea, but adding another analog stick wouldnt be a redesign of the system. that would be a NEW system.
two different things here.
i like the new USB slot, much less fragile. but i dont get why the screen would have to flick out unless there was something underneath it.
maybe a keyboard??

Personally I would love a mini-keyboard that attaches via mini-usb and and perhaps even has a stand system (any other old Newton users here?) But why should it be up to Sony to do that? If they have it enabled for the browser some third party should put it out!

Maybe I'm the only one, but I don't want a new PSP model. I don't wanna pay another $350 for it (That's what it costs around here)

Txa, you're wrong about single analog FPS. Check N64 Goldeneye, Perfect Dark and others on DC.
