- Character skills are displayed through a command list on the bottom-left corner. Available options will change based on a variety of factors, such as distance from an opponent.
- The controls will be "simple enough that even players who aren't into action games will be okay."
- Destroying the environment is not only fun, it's encouraged: a character's "Brave" meter will go up, which allows for special attacks.
- Like a true RPG, winning can net players experience points, which can be used to level up.

I remember when we all thought this was going to be an original RPG. Hawt! Then it was speculated that it would be a fighting game. Hmmm. Now it's all but confirmed to be some sort of menu-based fighting game? Horror! It's like 3 consecutive punches to the kidney. Someone hold me...

This is sounding more like the new (well, ported from PS2) Gundam game, Gundam Seed: Rengou vs. Z.A.F.T. Portable, just came out in Japan, it happens to be my favourite game for last month or two.
I don't think it's going to be menu based at all, it's more like Dragon ball series on PSP (or actually, more like Brawl). but as long as you can have 4 on 4 + battles via AD-Hoc or even infrastructure, I'm in.
and frankly, I don't have expectation for this game. If it's good, great, if no, whatever. (a totally different story with Crisis Core)

It's going to be like Kingdom Hearts.

Nothing like Kingdom Hearts.
I think the most accurate comparison must be the Gundam one... an action-fighting game, but with no missiles/lasers of course (maybe magic tho) and a bit more melee-oriented.
Oh, and the more unlike Smash Bros the game is, the better IMO. That game's fighting system bores me to death.

Yeah, but I'm enthralled by the Gundam games for the fact that they're gundam games, and such a fighting format compliments the mech-anime action. I don't know how well it'll work on a game like Disidia. I mean, sure, it might technically work - but will it be fun?

Actually, Dissidia's gameplay is sounding like a more refined version of Eretzvaju's (Evil Zone in the US). 3D arenas, skills that change according to distance... all that things point to that. If you've played that game you'll know what I'm talking about.

From observing the recent scans, it seems more similar to PowerStone than SmashBrothers (gameplay wise at least).

PowerStone sucks IMO, it's like a horizontal Smash Bros. I bet you 10 bucks gameplay will be more like a refined, more 3D version of Evil Zone.

My question is, will it be story-driven like an RPG, with the battles "decided" using an action-style battle system, or will it be more like a traditional fighting game where you just go from battle to battle with short cutscenes between? I'm afraid it's going to be like the Quest mode in Soul Calibur, where it's just a bunch of battles strung out across a map with a short bit of story between them... ick. If it's the former (think Star Ocean or Tales of Whatever), I'd love it. If the latter... well, I might still rent it...
