In an effort to keep up with the high school theme of Brooktown High, Konami has set up MySpace pages for some of the characters. Maybe Konami should have just had the character's pictures feature close-ups on their eyes, be blurry, or shot from a very long distance, because these guys and gals are still as ugly as a gargoyle.
On her MySpace page, Elektra the goth says "The Sun is Evil". Asia the prep is quoted saying, "The Elderly and Fashion DO NOT MIX!" Oh ho ho, how stereotypes make me laugh. Could it be that gamer's will be lucky enough to have the characters as two dimensional, as they are unattractive? My Ouija board points to yes.
I'll happily avoid adding these peeps to my MySpace.

Ugly indeed. But they seem to look much better in motion, or at least they did last time I checked some videos of the game.
Still... anime models would've been much easier on the eyes, I think. But since the game had to be "americanized"... we have to swallow these models.

If you talk of 'dating sims' in the strictest sense (i.e. the console types w/ simulation aspects and all) the genre is mostly dead in Japan as well, with sales of new installments being rather dismal. The successful games of today are all more text-adventure than sim, and if you ever were to play the original (which you probably can't because of the language barrier) you'd know why there is a constant fanbase: sometimes the art direction and story are just that good. Some of these people write their own novels (which have sold and have been reviewed quite favorably) as well.
If the adventure game genre still existed in the US today these games might have had a shot outside of Asia. The cost is probably going to be too great though to make it worthwhile in today's market (20+hr voice acting, a GOOD translation of a script equivalent to 5+ paperbacks, etc), where you'll be facing an audience that'll most likely be hostile to any sort of content, regardless of whether it's good or not.

If they really wanted to try this genre in America they should have stuck with Tokimeki Memorial. Im really not sure who they are trying to appeal to here... casual gamers? I really don't think this will fly. There is some niche interest in the US for this genre, but its in the hardcore otaku gamer demographic not the casual.
