The Korean PlayStation website has announced the arrival of yet another update to PSP's official firmware. However, unlike previous updates, this revision will actually remove some functionality from the system. We've translated the text--it appears "Certificate Utility" will no longer appear on the XMB. Rather, the information used to be available in this section will be embedded directly into the games downloaded from the PLAYSTATION Store. This is a rather minor, but puzzling change.
According to the Korean website, the firmware will be released tomorrow, 4/19.

I believe it was used to authenticate ps1 games downloaded from ps3.

Probably because of the "keys.bin" trick used for Popstation. Sony didn't like people making their own PSone library portable.

Heh, keep dreaming - Sony typically promises things (and subsequently under-delivers) before release. It's really not their style to keep a "big thing" under wraps.

I doubt it's a security thing. I figure they are pushing the authentication into the game itself to open up more room in the flash for the PSP.

No offence, but they should just dump this PS1 authenticaion and let us all be. Those that cheat - tough! Those that don't - cool enough. We already know that firmware needs to be perfected for certain games, and even more titles require modification (like those that save after moving onto the second disc, or those with control issues). Besides, they'd still make do with the memory stick sales.
The primary reason I am still hanging onto the custom firmware is for the PS1 games.
