While the rest of the world has been denied access to PSP's GPS accessory, Sony is releasing a more advanced version of Minna no Chizu, the GPS software, in Japan. The new software, which must be purchased in stores, includes some new features:- Petamap: a database of user-submitted points of interest.
- PlaceEngine: software that determines your location based on nearby wi-fi points
- Pedestrian navigation routes, which include shortcuts through parks, tunnels, etc.
- Disaster relief centers: just in case.

Why, oh why, Sony do you snub your US users and then rub it in with upgrades for our Japanese friends? Don't you realize we desperately want the GPS and camera accessories among other things? Please wake up Sony Management!!!!!

I'm starting to wonder if it's political. Imagine the dent this will put in the dedicated GPS unit sales.
300 dollars on a GPS only unit or 300 dollars on a PSP that does so much more.

Guess you guys never heard of MapThis! Everybody around the world is using it for their PSP-GPS needs. It allows the use of the Sony GPS-290 (which I have) or a generic GPS location device..
The GPS-290 can be imported for around $65-$75 after shipping.
