What a tumultuous ride this has been: SCEA says no redesign, and then SCEE managing director Ray Maguire slipped that Sony's current PSP offering was just the "first iteration" of the platform. Speaking at the PSP in Education event, he noted that a smaller, lighter version of the console was coming. Like John Koller, he made specific note that the screen size will never get smaller: it's one of the PSP's best features.Immediately after the event, a Sony spokesperson told Gamesindustry.biz that there are no immediate changes planned for the system: the only developments would come in the form of firmware updates. So, what's the truth, Sony? We've been hearing way too many conflicting reports about this touchy subject.

What I took from it was that they were saying 'of course we are *always* looking to improve our platforms' ...

Given that EU is like last in everything from system launches and most game releases... I'd wager that SCE UK probably has no idea what the heck they're doing.
Boredom from nothing to do often results in delusions.

A redesign is inevitable, though I think it would best come out in 2008.

Hopefully Ray Maguire receives some flack for this because he is only going to hurt sales of the current psp. Potential buyers might wait on their purchase to see what Sony does. At least that's what I would do.

Yeah, a new PSP is inevitable, but the question is WHEN. OPM postulated March, so that's obviously not happening now. If not now, when?
I suspect we'll get solid news on it this year, with a likely release date originally slated for Christmas but more likely another slipped date for the USA like the December-JP/March-USA situation. So in other words, yes, it's coming, but not immediately --- but also not more than a year away.
That's my suspicion. I still expect to see a PSP 'Lite' model instead of a full PSP2 at this stage. An all new system probably won't bow for another couple of years... Unlike the high frequency and short duration of Gameboy/DS hardware runs like the GBA to the SP, SP to the SP+ & Micro, DS to the DS Lite).
