Without official numbers stated, it'll be hard to truly decipher Sony's cryptic message (for now). However, it appears that Sony's three pillar strategy is working quite well: PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable are all delivering robust sales, regardless of what some fanboys would like you to believe. Isn't it just a good time for everyone in the industry?
[Update 1: PSP sold through 211k units, while the DS managed 239k, according to Gamespot. Thanks, Tristan!]

From what I have heard the PSP did over 200k, and the DS did only ~250k. Regardless of the fact that the PSP is totally available and the DS is totally sold out (there have actually been Wii-style wait lines in places), it is great news if confirmed.

Whats also funny is that the ds is so much cheaper with an already estbalished market and caters to non gamers through stuff like cooking mania and nintendogs getting more aritcial figuares. Imagine how badly the psp would be winning if the price was the same.

Yeah I remember that nearly for the entire month of January and even up to last week, my EB said they only received around 4 DS Lites that were quickly sold, since New Years. Perhaps Nintendo is beginning to reach the peak of "exponential" growth in terms of sales.

Well, the only reason its "catching up" in the US is because there's a worldwide DS shortage. Plus, a majority of all the DS's are sold in Japan. In Japan last week, the DS almost sold as much as the PSP did in the whole 5-weeks in the US. Insane.

the thing is, i don't understand why it's so hard to produce enough of those DS. the thing's been out for a long time, how has manufacturing not been ramped up to levels that can deal with demand. i understand, they sell a ton of DS every month, but it's not as if it's 2 million every 30 days. It's more like 800,000 sold per month.

it would only have sold a little better had there not been a shortage, the shortage is artificial by nintendo to do a micriosoft liek approach (like I said theyre allies now and possibly merging). Its been out for a long time and it hasnt all fo a sudden been selling anymore than it has before so there is no reason for a shrotage of it. ALso if new zealand or australia or spain were as big as japan the psp would also be selling that well.

As reported earlier today, the Nintendo Wii was the most popular hardware platform in the land, selling over 435,503 units during the extended period. It was followed by the PlayStation 2 (299,352 units), the Xbox 360 (294,000 units), the PlayStation 3 (243,554 units), the Nintendo DS (239,000 units), the PSP (211,000 units), the Game Boy Advance (179,000 units), and the GameCube (24,000 units). NPD did not report sales figures for the original Xbox, further indicating the platform's demise is imminent.

It seems like only a difference of only 20,000 units between the two

NPD is useless for anything other than basic trends in the market. They don't report online sales or those of some major retailers.

Well, chances are they're making a profit out of the PSP now, even with the hardware sales.
Good games available, good games coming... Also new features coming... The PSP is pretty far from dead.

less than 30 thousand is a very small gap between the DS and PSP in the US. There is no reason the DS should have a shortage. Its far easier to manufacture than the PSP, and they have been dealing with demand when it was far greater, so whats the deal? As for the PSP, im glad its closing the gap here in the states. It shows why sony isnt as worried about the system as some of the doom and gloom journalists seem to be.

Sony is doing this because they don't want our time to be taken up by old ps1 games instead of new PSP games.
Why else would they be doing this?

Good for them I guess. I'm still waiting for that FF7 spin-off so I'll actually play the thing. A PS3 game that doesn't suck might be nice.
Sony has the software support, let's see some of it already.
