As if Nokia introducing a new generation of N-Gage products wasn't enough, Dell is supposedly interested in also partaking in the handheld gaming war. PCPlus notes that their recent acquisition of Alienware should be a sign of the company's growing interest in the gaming sector. However, due to Dell's strong partnerships with Microsoft and Intel, expect any potential gaming device from the company to more closely resemble an Ultra-Mobile PC (UMPC) than a PSP. However, considering PSP's strong non-gaming focus, a new gaming-oriented handheld from Dell will compete more against the PSP than Nintendo's dual-screened portable.[Via Joystiq]

The Dell Axim x51v is a pretty sweet PDA with a nice 16MB video subsystem ... leveraging that into a handheld gaming system would be a nice trick. I just wonder how they'll really do it - would it be Windows Mobile based to get the Pocket PC software base? But then the price ... (x51v is ~$600)

Problem with the video cards in PDAs is that almost nobody really supports their proprietary hardware directly, so all you really get is a slight bump in framerate.
Anyway, since Dell moves a LOT of PC and PDA hardware, you can figure they'd be able to tap their dealings with nVidia or ATI for some fairly killer hardware.
Dell PDAs have generally been thought to be among the best PPC devices out there - so I'd have very high expectations for a handheld. More the merrier, although I don't think they'd dominate the field. I'd expect a PSP-like device with multimedia capabilities and, sadly, suffering the same lack of focus and kids/women/nongamer appeal.

For Dell to be even considering this indicates their Axim business is dying. Dell must be desperate!
