A public message announcement from the PSP Fanboy team: Stop asking if you can downgrade your system. Currently, downgraders only work for PSPs with firmware 2.80 or below. Constantly leaving comments about downgrading from 3.03 will not get responses.
So, what are you supposed to do then? N00bz, "homebrew without a clue," answers some of your burning questions. They note a few key points: there is a "kernel mode exploit" in all PSPs, up to version 3.03, that seems to be unchanged. Once a "user-mode exploit" can be found, it will be theoretically possible to run homebrew on all PSPs--even downgraders should work.
But when will this happen? Who knows. Certainly, there are hard-working homebrew coders trying to find exploits in all of Sony's latest. However, N00bz recommends that if you're ever serious about switching over to homebrew, you should stop upgrading your PSP altogether. 3.04 or whatever future firmware upgrade Sony releases will most likely address these exploits; and it should be much easier to run exploits on 2.81 versus 3.03. There's no guide as to when the homebrew community will release something, but we advise you: please be patient. Personally, I'll keep upgrading to Sony's official firmware because I actually like playing legal games.
[Update 1: Looks like I offended a few of you with my overly bitter comment. I'd like to apologize to those of you that do actually use your homebrew PSPs in a legit manner. As an acknowledgement of the harsh tone I took, I will not delete the comment. Sorry to those that were offended: you are clearly upstanding in an industry where many people take game developers for granted.]

Your implication that homebrew games are not legal is not only flat-out ignorant, but insulting as well.

ya Abscissa is right. Thats just so wrong to say, even other writers on this site use 3.03-OE. Just because all you would do with custom firmware is play Games you didn't buy sure don't mean everyone else will or is.
Limit yourself to only SONY apps and games? That's almost like getting a windows computer and only running apps from MS..no thx

Dude homebrew is not about illegal games so don't pull that last line crap. There are perfectly legit reasons for running your own applications on. IR Remote Control, VNC Client, Divx support, and coming soon Java! Dude what's illegal about that?
Oh and I suppose you don't use bittorrent because it's illegal too.

I think it is very honorable for you guys to come here implying that the *primary* use of downgraders has nothing to do with piracy.
It is either delusional or dishonest, but admirable.
Let's be very honest - people downgrade because they cannot play their downloaded ISO's on the current firmware.
I'm sure there are some who do *not* use it for piracy, who *only* use it to run 'pure' applications that were developed by others and given freely for PSP use. Those are the same people who download MP3's and games and use them 'for demos' and have increased their purchasing by using these valuable research tools.
But most people who are avoiding upgrading are not so honorable and saintly. They want free access to games requiring the latest firmware - otherwise why would there these 'OE' editions? And that is there choice - just let's not get all affronted and huffy and pretend that the situation is different than it really is.

I love my custom PSP, there was only 1 game I was playing on my PSP before the "upgrade" (Monster Hunter, and I can't stand the lack of Infrastructure mode), now I'm running some PS1 games, which I'm glad I can do because I hadn't played them in ages, and I don't have $599 for the PS3 versions.
I'd wager that playing my PS1 games on a PSP is crossing the line, though I guess others would argue that "it's your software", do what you want with it.
I don't know, I got the PSP at release, waited for the US DS Lite, and I definatly like the DS more than my PSP. I probably would of sold it if not for the homebrew stuff. I see nothing on the horizon for PSP that I must buy. Except maybe MH2, if Infrastructure is supported.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who found that line insulting.
I actually do upgrade my PSP to the latest but completely respect the homebrew guys. There are plenty of thrid party games people make on their own time and without pay for the PSP that can only be run through homebrew, and to call their work "illegal" is about as disrespectful as one can be.
I hope the author of this article will choose his words more carefully next time as to remain both professional and respectful of all of us.

OK - all of you 'Legal Homebrew' proponents ... make us eat our words. Show us 'all of the games' that you are talking about. Show us how cracking the OS is being used in a non-pirating manner *in a statistically significant way*.

Regardless what others say, homebrew is for illegal content, maybe 10% is legal, other then that, thats why you guys get it, cause your cheap asses and cant afford to stop smoking weed and buy the games, dont act all dumb, you do it on a computer, so why wouldnt you do it on a PSP.

Here's one site with a bunch of homebrew (legal) games:
http://pspupdates.qj.net/category/Homebrew-Games/cid/62
Most of the games are pretty basic stuff (again people doing it on their own time and without pay) and calling homebrew "illegal" is a smack to these hard working guys faces.
Take a look at pong online and CSpsp (counter-strike) in particular.
And that's just barely even touching the surface of it.
Sony should be embracing these third party homebrew developers if anything.
FYI I buy all my games and have never put a PSP game on a memory card.

Thanks for the link, Shane! Unfortunately it times out me ... I'll check it from home later.
Regarding this comment:
"calling homebrew "illegal" is a smack to these hard working guys faces"
I would agree if that was the only thing going on - but it isn't. I agree that there should be some sort of DevKit that would allow these guys to *legally* run small apps on the PSP. Sony *should* support the fans - these hard working guys you cite are doing a service to the community and deserve respect for that.
However, why is it that the people in this thread have to be so 'black & white' about the issue? I don't think it is unrealistic to assert that the majority of people with downgraded PSP's are using them to play commercial games and movies illegally off of their MSPro's. I believe that there is legit 'homebrew' out there, but Sony has made even the legit stuff seem 'gray market' because of their draconian upgrade schemes (1 feature included as the carrot to entice you to upgrade).

First off - securing and using ISOs =/= murdering a baby or bombing 10,000 plus civillians. It's laughable how gamers make moral issues out of their favourite hobby in this day and age. Hah.
Secondly, I see a lot of people passing assumptions about how does what their homebrew. Fact: Neither of you has/or ever will--most likely--have legit statistics to back-up these assumptions, so I'll just assume that some of us are a bit too pompous in our assumptions of the world and how people think (myself included).
Big friggin' deal.

Actually, there IS a downgrade to 3.03. It was made roughly a day or so after Andrew posted this. 3.03 users can now make the PSP a universal remote, sniff out WiFi, anything they want.
