Looking at data provided by VGCharts.org reveals an unnerving trend: the distressingly low sales of PSP software. One only has to look at Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, which sold 136,500 copies during its first month of sales in the US. While this certainly isn't a low amount, it nearly equals the number of copies sold in Japan ... in its first day of sales. Considering how the PSP has far more systems in distribution in America than Japan, shouldn't this game have sold better? The PSP system sold pretty well in December, reaching approximately a million units sold. However, the amount of software sold is dwarved by the Nintendo DS. Nintendo's portable sold through more than 5 million software sales. The PSP failed to break 1 million. The five-fold difference in sales doesn't accurately represent the hardware discrepancy: the PSP isn't trailing so drastically, in terms of hardware numbers.
So, why such low PSP software sales during the holiday season? Do you blame homebrew? Or, do you blame PSP's ability to do much more than gaming: certainly, there are people that are buying the system for its other capabilities, such as its video and music playback. Did you buy a PSP game in December?

I Vate PSP.
I bought the PSP because as TheGameDood and Brian said it has all of the other capabilities, I then got syphone filter, MGS:PO, Tekken, and Burnout and I now use my PSP mostly for that. On a whole I think that despite the psp's flaws it is a pretty good handheld system and that the sales aren't what they should be.
This is because we rich fat americans dont appreciate the worse graphics of the psp we see it as a playstation that is portable not a portable gaming system that is its own thing. The DS on the other hand being a gameboy is seen not a console that we all knew and loved but as a newer better version of a 2D side scrolling platform. I see it as a 3D, online, portable system that should in no way be chalanged by a 2D sidescroller that's only advantage is a second tough screen. This is why I vote PSP.
BTW whats up with andrew's cat pictures????????????

While they're certainly not the whole reason for low sales, I'd say that two factors are probably a big reason:
A) Price. As DiRT pointed out, $40 or $50 for a handheld game is still a bit of a shock to people who are used to paying $30 or so for a GBA or DS game. They don't realize that producing a PSP game costs more money in many cases, all they see is the higher price tag.
B) "Homebrew." And I use quotes because I only see a minority of the "homebrew" crowd actually using the system for semi-legit purposes, such as creating and using new software, playing ACTUAL backup games, etc. I'm sure the vast majority simply use it an umbrella because somehow they feel that they're entitled to free games.

It is the price of the games, and the price of the system and SONY's lack of effort to market this very kewl hand held. The only ads I have seen was a Christmas Ad that Target ran (PSP was a small part of the entire ad) and then there is the ones with the two mexican slang speaking dirtballs talking trashy about some games. This is very poor taste and if Sony does not wise up well then I may like my PSP but I will defintalely say the Hell with them. If Nintendo would sell a Hand Held that was anywhere nearly as powerful I would snatch it up in a moment.

ok, I didn't get my main point across the PSP (talking legit -- no homebrews) is a more powerfull better machine, while sony has its many flaws its electronics arent that terible. Nintendo has never answered your request PSP Trekster giving us powerful and awsome stuff.

The DS game I didn't want = playing a fat, middle-aged, moustached Italian plumber (again) driving a kid's go-kart on a multi-coloured "circuit" to collect some coloured discs, complete with music rejected by Fisher Price.
The PSP game I did want = playing Fernando Alonso driving the Renault R26 at the Suzuaka Formula 1 circuit to win the FIA World Championship, complete with the roar of 8 cylinders.
What's 20 bucks?
And Trekster's right: before a recent push in the UK (which seemed to start after Xmas...), I had NEVER seen a PSP advertisment on TV.

About the sales of MGS:PO.... I'm somewhat new to gaming, only got into it around 2004 when I got an Xbox. So I've never played a MGS game.
MGS:PO sounds interesting, but.. it also sounds impenetrable for anyone who doesn't know all the history of Solid Snake (whoever he is) or his big boss enemy whatever yadda. I have no idea if it would be an enjoyable game for someone like me who has no prior history with the franchise. Sales probably reflect that attitude.

Oh yah lets blame extra features the PSP has and Piece O DS does not have, yah thats a reason to think that there is no good games. There is a ton of great games already, DS owners either want to stay blind dumb and stupid with there numerous reincarnations of mario, pokemon, yoshi button mashing pixelated simplistic childlike games. They need to WTF up and see there is SO much more that the PSP is doing in games and will continue to do.
DS OWNS Nothing, just a overpriced paperweight!

Maybe because the PSP barely has any games worth playing and most of those have loading issues? I've owned a PSP since the week of launch (day 2 or 3). I own a grand total of 5 games. There's just not much for it, and the games are FAR too expensive for a portable console. I own more game gear and lynx games than PSP. That's sad... My game collection approachs 4 digits, so to only have 5 for a system is REALLY low.

I believe it is mostly Sony being jaded. The PS2 has been tops for so long, with little to no advertising for the system itself. I think they got stuck in a mindset that says "let the game makers sell our hardware." I think the PSP is a great system. I use mine to watch TiVo while I am away form home, games and go online. Although the online aspect is sooooo sloooow. I hope it speeds up when they open up the 333 for all functions.
