Two different Wal-Mart employees seem to claim that Sony is taking back their PSP inventory from the world's largest retailer. The DCEmu community seems to think that Sony's attempting to patch homebrew vulnerable PSPs with less exploitable firmware and hardware. But would that really be cost efficient?I'll scratch this rumor as false, for now. More than anything else, these Wal-Mart employees were probably shocked by the surprising sales of the PSP over the holidays. Where did all their inventory go? Into the customer's hands.

Given that eradicating home-brew is as simple as patching with anything over 1.71 - I would not be at all surprised if they were doing it. Pull off the shelve, patch, put back...

Correct.
As for TA-82 motherboards - I obviously don't have any hard data (doubt anybody does except for SONY). But in the past 2 months I bought 2 PSPs with TA-82 and they both had firmware below 2.71 (so easily downgradable with the 2.71 HEND downgrader Dark Alex recently released).
I will have to check out 0okm's downgrader. I don't need it for myself. But it's a good thing to know. This is the first time I've heard about it.
Thx,
Michael

I don't believe Sony would go that far. Way too expensive. None of my friends that own a PSP even know what "homebrew" means... I don't think it's a big of a threat as some would like to believe.

Michael: You mean 2.71. But most new PSPs these days are TA-82s, which are homebrew resistant and run firmware 2.80. However, 0okm has developed a downgrader that has a degree of success, so that's becoming less of an issue.
