Dream Games is a new weekly column where we explore a game we'd love to see on the PSP. Feel free to check in, and comment, every Tuesday.
Resident Evil 4
To kick-start this feature, I decided to shoot for the stars. Resident Evil 4 is without a doubt one of the finest games created in the last generation. The game completely reinvented the Resident Evil formula, placing the camera behind the game's protagonist, Leon, freeing the player from the notorious tank-like controls the series was infamous for. With its chilling enemies and brilliant gameplay, the game earned an impressive 96 average on Metacritic.
Why PSP?
Resident Evil 4's behind-the-back perspective removes one of the greatest frustrations of most PSP action games: the lack of camera control. The Gamecube original rarely utilized the second analog stick, simply because it was unnecessary. The game's intuitive controls come from its simplicity: a single button controls much of the action that you'll need. Resident Evil 4 was one of the few games that ran in widescreen only last generation, making the PSP's 16:9 display even more ideal.
Is it possible?
Although the controls may be well suited for the PSP, the game's technological requirements may mean this game will never see the light on our system. Capcom did an incredible job squeezing this game onto a PlayStation 2, and I doubt that their technical mojo would fail on the PSP. If a port of this fine game isn't being made, hopefully the PSP will see an original Resident Evil of its own: one that uses the same, elegant control scheme used by Resident Evil 4. And if we don't get Resident Evil, at least we can look forward to Silent Hill.

I would like to see a Resident Evil game on the PSP. But not RE4 more of a spin off where different people from past RE games are in it. Plus it be a multi player RE game maybe like a MMO so it would have to have Infrastructure some thing like that would be nice to see. So if you want to see a RE game may be lots of people should send e-mails to Capcom at megamail@capcom.com.
I have sent an e-mail before and they did say they where looking into one. But as of right now have no plans for one. so there is always hope for one. So if it keeps the stuff from RE4 the PSP version could be really great.

Plenty of N64 and Dreamcast ports would work fine, as those highly respected consoles only had one analogue stick, which is now supposedly an unforgivable sin on the PSP. Jet Set Radio, Space Channel 5 and Goldeneye would be a good start.

Someone obviously didn't play the game. Tank controls are there, just not as apparent because of the new camera view.

I think that any Resident Evil game to hit the psp would be great. Especially Resident Evil 4.

i agree with the clunge that some other console ports would be great. the success of the original goldeneye has never been met, even with the addition of another analog stick, so a remake of the original would probably do pretty well on the psp, especially with online play (geez, i think if i didn't already own a psp, the release of goldeneye: portable ops, would sell me one by itself).
however, we all know that no nintendo exclusive title will ever be seen on "our" handheld. what i would give for a real version of mario kart or mk64 on the psp. i've considered buying the ds solely for mkds but can't lower myself to do it.
sony's best attempt at something similar was Crash Team Racing. i'm waiting for that to show up in the playstation store, but the way things are looking, i'm not about to hold my breath.
d@mn it sony!!!
i'm now off topic, but what made me drop over $300 on my psp in the first place oh so long ago, was its potential. so many possibilities with the umds, downloadable content, online play, etc....
now, after almost two years, with what i see as even more potential than ever, we're still waiting for sony to get their act together.

Just wait for Silent Hill 0rigins, guys. From what I've seen it's going to play like Resident Evil 4. On the plus side, I doubt the story will suck as much as RE4's.
"Duh, let's infect the president's daughter, George."
"Brilliant!"

Well a psp only re sounds nice, like the remade "deadly silence" for the ds. what i'd like to see personally, now that capcom has worked over not only re 4 but the upcoming 5. is Resident evil outbreak file #3, and before you kill me think about it, the first two outbreaks had online capabilites. not good but they had it, with what capcom had done they could make a third outbreak so much better. more stages, the return of the civilans aspect the game ha d, more monsters re chatacter apperances. maybe even something im not thinking of right now. i just think if they decided to look back on outbreak with all they know now. it could rock out loud.
