Anyone that has been around the Internet block or visited a game store lately may have heard someone claim the PSP has little to no good games on the platform. If you're anything like me, you like to wear your girlfriend's underwear and you also hate to hear bad words about the PSP. My personal PSP game collection is larger than my DS or Xbox 360 game libraries and after hearing about the lack of great games on the system so often, I began to wonder if perhaps I just had a terrible taste in games. While I can't prove that my gaming interests are worthwhile, I did dig up some info on the PSP library and whether or not there are many quality games on the system.
It isn't just gaming fans who dis the PSP, critics do as well. Keeping that in mind, I wondered how the PSP game library critically stacked up against its competitor; the oft praised DS. What I found may be surprising.
Data Collected from Metacritic
Amount of US released PSP games rated 80 and above: 38 (not counting Advent Children since it isn't a game)
Amount of US released DS games rated 80 and above: 28 (and 4 of those are versions of Nintendogs)
So it seems that these same critics that praise PSP games, must have a short-term memory when they bash the system's lack of quality titles. I'm in no way trying to put down the DS with the example listed above, just attempting to prove that the PSP isn't devoid of quality like an episode of War at Home. Hopefully fellow PSP fanboys can use the above proof to dissuade negative words about your system of choice. In any case, it should make you feel good about owning the system.

I think that the PSP and DS are both great systems with different strengths and that people should stop bashing each one for stupid reasons. If your priveleged enough to get both systems, than get both of them and enjoy some of the best handheld gaming ever created. If your not lucky enough to have both systems, than enjoy the games that you can play. Is it really that hard?

I hate to be negative and all but...
Really, I hate to say this, this is the first post you made and I dont want to feel like an idiot whose only objective is to make others feel bad but...
This is not what I expect from PSP fanboy...
The personal touch is great, i agree with it but I do not believe we should be that closed-minded. If we show a little bit of maturity and perspective, we can show that the Psp is still a good system. Please, feel free to post whatever opinion you have...
Andrew has made a great job so far.
I am sure you can both work to make psp fanboy a better place
( I feel bad just for posting this...)
(please, do not get mad and take this as an insult)

You are assuming that all critics who rate one system's games rate all the games for the other system as well. You also have to keep in mind that some reviewers rate the games based on what's available for the system where others rate what's available on all consoles. A mediocre game might get a better review if it's held against the other games on the system or a worse review compared to choices from the competition.

I have had a PSP for a while and for a long time the only games I had were Lumines and Kazuo (Sudoku). It frustrated me that there weren't more games that I wanted.
So I decided to buy a DS. I went to the store, looked at the games and decided that there were only about 3 games that I really wanted for DS anyway. I ended walking out with Tekken, Daxter and Field Commander instead, and I'm still playing those games a few months later.
So I think that the PSP library has improved a lot recently, but people don't want to hear it - they have already decided that the PSP is "dead", and that the DS must be the best because it's selling so well.
But there may be a few people who buy a DS, get Mario, Mario Kart, Nintendogs and Elite Beat Agents, then sit back and think - "Hmmm... there's not as many great games for this as I thought"
I think what the PSP needs is a DS Lite style re-design and re-launch. I think that will get people excited about it again and make people notice the new games coming out.

I have had a DS before I got a PSP (again because I sold the first one for lack of good games) and I must say that I already have more PSP games after 4 weeks than I have got for DS since I got it when the Lite was released.
Most DS games-- let's face it-- are crap marketed to kids. Not even 1 game out of 10 makes an interesting use of the stylus. Just look what they're doing to the Castlevania series: it now looks childish and cute. Give us back the gothic portraits of Aria of Sorrow and Circle of the Moon! Now if you want a devastating comparison, try Gunpey on PSP then try it on the DS.

If you're going to mention the 4 versions of Nintendogs, I'll mention that most of that supposedly bigger list of 80+ games are ports of games I'd rather play on the PS2 (usually).

I think those people who like to criticize the PSP just don't spend enough time on the handheld or worst still, didn't own one at all. However, all these bashing does tell me something, it's that the majority can be so wrong.

I've said this so many times before, but most of all this negative talks about the PSP's lacking library comes from people who formed an opinion about the PSP from it's first year in existence (which was very lackluster) and just have never bothered to touch one or keep track of the games coming out on it anymore.

(im taking it back tho.) so maybe why thats everyones compaing for. not the lack of good game releases, just the lack of them being abt to be found.

hmmm, I remember Interstate 78 saying he sold is older psp, good to see you still have this new one...
DS is in there own market. PSP is too. Don't think you can really compare the two. Its like comparing what linux distro is the best. You get what I'm saying?
Just as long as the PSP doesn't end up like the Dreamcast.... lol
I loved that system.

Wow, it sounds too good to be true, until you look at the list of the games and they are mostly rehashes of PS2 games.
What gives?? The D-Pad is terrible for beat-em-ups so there goes a good few games (which I can go and hook up an arcade stick for to a PS2 and play the games how they were meant to be played)
There are alot of rehashes on this system as well... There is simply nowhere near enough variety in new types of games on the system. Why is PSP being targeted as a rehash system? I've counted about 15+ on that list so far... Sort it out and I might want to pick one up.
Wow, no Ultimate Ghosts 'n' Goblins?? Wow. Well done PSP Fanboy for using a list that can't even see some of the better releases on the PSP... It figures.
QUOTE Interstate 78
"Just look what they're doing to the Castlevania series: it now looks childish and cute."
Wow. If you played either of them, then you would of noticed that those 2 DS games are some of the best Castlevania games in the series yet. So the graphics don't fit your clothes, big deal, get over it and just play the damn games instead.

Take a look. Quite a few are multi platform games and there are some other I don't agree with when the prequels are the same/better. Some of the multi platform games just end up better on a console because you hook up the right accessories.
Every Extra Extend? Exit? Some of the better games never hit the top of the list...

You know why the majority of better games never hit the top on psp game sales? its because the demographic for those arent there. The people who own a psp want games with awesome mature lookn visuals and mindless beat-em-up gameplay. Yea i agree these games arent bad at all but its what psp owners tend to go for (ex. grand theft auto). If anyones gonna say that the psp "needs a ds-like redesign" such as touch screen support than what would that tell you about it? That Nintendo with their DS has capture the huge untouched area of non-gamers just with its simplicity and innovative gameplay. Yes a lot of games dont use very serious touch screen features but a lot of games dont need it. Do games like children of mana and castlevania need to rely on this? Not at all. Just having the potential for creative features in any game on the DS is somethn all DS owners are excited about(which is quite a lot of ppl..even outside of japan now thanks to this x-mas season).Sony is goin down. Theyre not even out of the running. They have a nice little system that just has a whole different market appeal....which is hardcore gamers sadly. I should know...i see this everyday when dealing with customers at my local gamestore.

You just can't say anything GOOD about the PSP without the goddamned DS fanboi contingent piping up.
"those 2 DS games are some of the best Castlevania games in the series yet."
The first DS Castlevania SUCKED thanks to one fatal flaw: The decision to force players to fumble the stylus out and draw a stupid seal symbol at the height of a boss battle (and only then). Perfect example of token stylus gameplay forced down our throats, and it killed the game dead for me right there.
"The people who own a psp want games with awesome mature lookn visuals and mindless beat-em-up gameplay"
You clearly don't know shit about what PSP owners want - probably because you don't have one.
"If anyones gonna say that the psp "needs a ds-like redesign" such as touch screen support than what would that tell you about it?"
Nothing, because the DS didn't introduce the touchscreen to handhelds. It didn't even introduce the touchscreen to handheld gaming (Zodiac, Game.com, PDA's, etc).
"That Nintendo with their DS has capture the huge untouched area of non-gamers just with its simplicity and innovative gameplay. "
More like, Nintendo has sold craploads of games and handhelds to people who buy into the hype of yet another Pokemon or Mario rehash... Or 'non' gamers intrigued by the idea of a 'brain training' or 'cooking' game. Nintendo does character/concept hype very well: The goofy cherubic face adorning Train your Brain, the adorable puppies of Nintendogs (now a stuffed toy at a store near you) or the beloved Mario legion of cartoons, toys, books, etc... Trouble is, none of those games interest me whatsoever. True unique or original games like Phoenix Wright or Trauma Center are, sadly, still few and far between on DS, and they aren't what sell so many units.
"Just having the potential for creative features in any game on the DS is somethn all DS owners are excited about"
In other words, having the 'potential for creative features' are wonderful, even when they go mostly unrealized. Take Final Fantasy III - big seller, crappy use of 3D, absolutely zero 'creative use' of the touchscreen or even the second screen at all, hardly. Whee. That's innovation!
"I should know...i see this everyday when dealing with customers at my local gamestore."
No offense, but some of the most idiotic retail workers I've ever dealt with have been game store employees.
"Sony is goin down."
Whatever you say, Gameshop Clerk.

I'm not saying they're bad games, I'm saying that the whole DS Market is being brought down to childish status by publisher who, for some reason, believe that a majority of DS owners are kids. I should have specified it's the box art I was talking about. Look at the last 4 Castlevania boxshots side by side and you`ll see what I mean. Like I said, the best example is Gunpey. Look them up, check out videos. It's mistifying.
